Slayr

I first discovered Slayr, this rapper from Philly who also writes and produces his own tracks, late in 2025. He seriously blew up in the underground rap scene after dropping his mixtape, Half Blood. Then, early the next year, he released a deluxe version called Bloodluxe, and that’s when everyone really started paying attention. He’s been on my radar ever since.

Slayr’s music combines energetic, polished production with catchy, autotuned vocals. It’s designed to appeal to a wider audience compared to some of the more intense and raw sounds popular in the underground rage music scene.

EsDeeKid

Right now, Liverpool rapper and songwriter EsDeeKid is one of the most exciting and enigmatic new artists in the UK trap and rage music scene.

I remember when EsDeeKid really blew up – it was 2025, and his mixtape Rebel just took over the internet that summer and fall! Everyone was sharing it. Songs like “4 Raws,” “Phantom,” and especially “LV Sandals” with Fakemink and Rico Ace really put him on the map. He went from being a UK underground artist to someone everyone internationally was talking about in the rap world – it was seriously impressive!

The song “Rebel” has been streamed over a billion times worldwide on Spotify. It also spent several weeks on the UK Albums Chart in 2025 and early 2026.

Although EsDeeKid isn’t a definite pick for the 2026 XXL Freshman Class, it would be unexpected if XXL didn’t seriously consider him for the cover this year.

Hurricane Wisdom

Hurricane Wisdom, a rapper, singer, and songwriter from Havana, Florida, is quickly becoming a major name in Southern hip-hop. He’s gained a large and growing following online and on streaming services thanks to his heartfelt lyrics, catchy melodies, and smooth vocals.

Trap Dickey, a rapper and songwriter from South Carolina, quickly became a rising star in Southern hip-hop in 2026. Recently signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), he achieved a major hit with the song “Down South,” featuring Key Glock of Paper Route.

Jim Legxacy

As a fan, I’m really excited about the potential 2026 XXL Freshman Class, and I think we might finally see UK rap get the recognition it deserves on a huge scale. Everyone’s talking about EsDeeKid and Fakemink, which is great, but honestly, there are so many other incredible UK artists coming up, like Jim Legxacy, who I think are just as worthy of a spot. It feels like this year could really be a turning point for international rap!

Jim Legxacy’s first mixtape, “black british music,” released on XL Recordings, quickly gained praise from critics. The mixtape highlighted his ability to work with many different musical styles, mixing influences from jerk, trap, rage, pop rap, and alternative R&B into a uniquely creative project – one of the most interesting to come out of the UK’s underground music scene lately.

Jim Legxacy stands out from other artists because he’s a talented songwriter and singer who can adapt to many styles. He creates catchy, emotional songs with complex production, and isn’t afraid to blend genres. This has earned him a loyal following and is starting to get him noticed by people in the music industry.

YKNIECE

Over the past year, Atlanta has become a major force in trap music, largely thanks to a surge of talented female rappers. Artists like Pluto & YKNIECE (“WHIM WHAMIEE”), BunnaB (“Bunna Summa”), and Bankroll Ni (“Im So ATL”) have all released popular songs that are leading a new wave of female hip-hop from the city.

Few artists from that movement have built momentum as quickly as YKNIECE.

YKNIECE has quickly become a rising star in the Atlanta rap scene over the last few months. I’m seriously hyped for Belly Gang Kushington! He’s been blowing up all over the country, and Billboard just named him their Rookie of the Month for March 2026 – huge! If he keeps making music this good, I think even XXL Magazine is going to have to put him on the cover of their summer issue. It feels inevitable!

BunnaB

Okay, so I’ve been really into the Atlanta rap scene lately, and Bunna B is seriously blowing up. She’s the second female rapper from Atlanta I’ve discovered who’s really making waves. Honestly, she and other female artists from the city are becoming a huge part of what’s defining trap music right now – it’s a really exciting moment for hip-hop, seeing all this fresh talent.

The rapper known as “Bunna Summa” became incredibly popular in the summer of 2025. Her lively style and music, which reminded people of early 2000s Atlanta club anthems, quickly spread across platforms like TikTok and gained a strong following within the Southern rap scene.

In 2025, “Bunna Summa” reached number 15 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and number 27 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Throughout 2026, she’s kept up her success by consistently releasing popular songs. She now has over three million monthly listeners on Spotify and her music is featured on major playlists on Apple Music, YouTube Music, and other streaming services.

Songs like “Bunna Summa,” “Hoes Be Mad,” “Innit,” and “Mad Again” are all popular on Spotify, each getting over 20 million listens. “Bunna Summa” is a standout track, having already reached over 60 million streams in less than two years.

10th Spot: H3adband

The online vote for the 10th spot in XXL’s Freshman Class has become a major yearly discussion in the hip-hop community.

The artists vying for the last remaining spot this year are particularly talented, but Louisiana rapper H3adband is a frontrunner. He’s gained a lot of attention recently thanks to his energetic music and increasing popularity on TikTok and other streaming services.

The song “BOO” quickly made Louisiana rapper H3adband famous starting in late 2025 and continuing into early 2026. It was his first song to appear on the Billboard charts, reaching number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
