The 1981 anime film Kyoufu Densetsu Kaiki! Frankenstein is getting a new lease on life with a 4K restoration and its first-ever release on physical media after more than 40 years. Originally produced by Toei Animation and licensed by Marvel Entertainment, the movie is based on Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel Frankenstein, but takes a lot of inspiration from the 1970s Marvel comic book series The Monster of Frankenstein. What makes this production unique is its surprisingly mature and graphic storyline, which was a significant change from most animated adaptations at the time. This has helped it become a beloved cult classic among fans of older anime.

The 98-minute TV special was directed by Yugo Serikawa and Toyoo Ashida and first appeared on TV Asahi. Set in 1860, it tells the story of Victor Frankenstein and his assistant, Zuckel, as they create their famous monster. After a struggle, the monster falls off a cliff and is thought to be dead, but he actually survives. He then begins a sad journey, struggling to be understood. Eventually, he finds friendship with a blind man and his granddaughter, Emily, who name him Franken and see that all he wants is companionship.

This story delves into intense feelings of paranoia and loneliness. Victor is pursued by a police inspector, Bellbeau, and threatened by a former employee, all while desperately trying to find the creature he brought to life. The tale is filled with religious and philosophical ideas. A key moment shows the monster finding shelter in a church and drawing a connection between his wounded hands and the crucifixion. Ultimately, the creature tragically ends his own life by jumping from a mountain, wanting to escape a world he never wanted to be a part of.

Deaf Crocodile is releasing a new 4K restoration of the Japanese film Kyoufu Densetsu Kaiki! Frankenstein, retitled Frankenstein Legend of Terror for English-speaking audiences. This is the first time the film has been available on a physical format since a dubbed VHS release by Vestron Video in 1984. The restoration includes the original Japanese audio with English subtitles, and features a haunting score by Kentaro Haneda.
