adidas Originals Gives the Handball Spezial a Loafer Makeover in Two New Colorways

The adidas Handball Spezial Loafer is releasing in two colorways: “Warm Vanilla” (Warm Vanilla/Off White/Gum) and “Core Black” (Core Black/Cloud White/Gum). These shoes have SKUs KI4774 and KK2786, retail for ¥15,950 JPY (approximately $100 USD), and will be available starting May 29th in Japan through adidas Japan.

The Handball Spezial has become a popular and influential shoe from adidas Originals recently. Now, adidas is exploring a new take on the classic with a slip-on version, called the Handball Spezial Loafer. Launching in Japan on May 29th, it comes in two color combinations – Core Black with white and gum, and Warm Vanilla with off-white and gum – and maintains the same leather and gum sole design that made the original so appealing.

To truly understand the new Spezial loafer, it helps to know where it came from. Originally released in 1979 as a shoe for indoor handball, it was designed for athletic performance. Over time, it became popular as a streetwear staple. Its simple design – a low profile, clean leather, and a distinctive gum sole – made it practical and comfortable for everyday wear. Adidas has embraced this blend of performance and style in various Spezial versions over the years, each appealing to different tastes while staying true to the original design. This loafer version is the most dressed-up and refined version of the Spezial yet.

These shoes aren’t a radical reinvention, but a refined update to a classic. The leather upper keeps the clean look of the original Spezial, and the leather stripes offer a more subtle, sophisticated feel. They still have the signature gum sole, connecting them to the shoe’s indoor sports roots and providing a recognizable visual detail. Small touches like a metal logo and delicate piping give a hint of classic loafer style without making the shoe overly formal.

These two new versions of the Spezial shoe offer contrasting looks within its existing range of colors. The black and white version is straightforward and classic, fitting in with the shoe’s traditional style and making it easy to pair with different outfits. The warmer, vanilla-colored version is more subtle and unique. Its soft, neutral tones, combined with off-white stripes and a gum sole, are designed to complement the shoe’s loafer-inspired design. While the black version is instantly recognizable, the vanilla colorway offers a more understated and interesting look.

It’s important to consider the bigger picture: adidas Originals is deliberately growing its collection of classic shoe styles beyond just sneakers. The Samba and Spezial lines have seen the most innovation, and now the brand is applying that same approach to loafers. While the Samba hasn’t ventured into this style, the Spezial is becoming the go-to line for trying out new designs based on older models. This strategy caters to customers who want shoes with a classic feel, but in a loafer style that doesn’t need laces or to be worn casually to feel appropriate.

The adidas Originals Handball Spezial Loafer will be available in Japan starting May 29th. We’ll share information about its release in the US soon.
