Around ten years ago, the Fast & Furious movies were incredibly popular and seemed like they could do anything. Vin Diesel and the team consistently delivered over-the-top action – from ridiculously long runways to tanks on highways and even Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stopping missiles with his bare hands – and the films continued to be huge box office successes. However, the last few installments haven’t performed as well, and the franchise is starting to show some weakness.
Look, I love the Fast & Furious movies, but let’s be real – the recent ones haven’t been hitting the same way. The box office is showing people are getting a little tired of the same old thing, and it feels like the franchise is running out of steam, kind of like what happened with Marvel for a while. But I’m actually excited about what Vin Diesel announced – four Fast & Furious TV shows coming to Peacock! That’s a big swing, even for a universe like Marvel, but I think it’s exactly what this franchise needs. Plus, Peacock proved they can breathe new life into older properties with the Ted prequel – it was genuinely funny! I’m hoping these shows will do the same for Fast & Furious and get everyone hyped again.
The first Fast & Furious television series is moving forward with Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman as showrunners. In addition, Nick Wootton, Charmaine DeGraté, Ingrid Escajeda, and Joe Henderson are each writing the first episode for other potential Fast & Furious shows, which could lead to a large amount of Fast & Furious content available for streaming, similar to what Marvel has done.
The Only Way Is Up For Fast & Furious After Fast X
It’s been three years since the last Fast & Furious film, Fast X, and it didn’t really hit the mark. The over-the-top action, which ignores the laws of physics, is starting to feel repetitive and stale. While Jason Momoa was energetic as the villain Dante Reyes, his performance felt disconnected from the rest of the movie – almost like he was in a cartoon.
Instead of moving the story toward a conclusion, Fast X focused on bringing back familiar faces, introducing new ones, and planning future movies and team-ups. It didn’t feel like a grand finale; it felt like more of the same, repeating the issues that have plagued the Fast & Furious series for a while.
The plan was to end the movie series with a two or three-part finale, but the second film has faced major production issues and delays. “Fast Forever” has had multiple release date changes and several different writers, and it’s still not finished and ready for release.
As a huge fan of the Fast & Furious franchise, I’m honestly a little worried about where things are going with the movies. They haven’t really hit the mark for a while now, so I’m cautiously optimistic about the new TV shows. If they’re anything like Andor or WandaVision – really creative and well-made – that would be incredible. But honestly, they’d have to be pretty bad to be worse than Fast X, so there’s a lot of potential there!
Predicting What Fast & Furious’ New Show(s) Will Be About
It’s still unknown whether the four or more planned Fast & Furious TV shows will feature characters we already know from the films or introduce entirely new ones. Either option seems likely. The animated series Spy Racers, for example, took a different direction and, surprisingly, made the movies seem realistic and down-to-earth in comparison.
What really draws audiences to these movies are the characters. People return to watch Dom Toretto and his crew, not just because it’s a Fast & Furious film. There’s potential for spin-off shows focusing on supporting characters too – Tej and Roman could star in a buddy-cop series similar to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, or the children of Brian and Mia could carry on the legacy as the next generation of skilled drivers and operatives.
