Supergirl’s New Blue Lantern Costume Just Changed the DC Universe

While Hal Jordan and John Stewart are well-known Green Lanterns, others outside the Lantern Corps have also used power rings – like Batman, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman. A new hero will join this exclusive group this June.

A new comic book series, Supergirl: Survive, introduces a unique take on Kara Zor-El, showing her using a Blue Lantern ring for the very first time. Written by Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan (known for Kill Your Darlings) with art by Rod Reis (New Mutants), the story centers on a young Kara as she journeys through space with an infant Kal-El.

I’m so excited for this new story arc! Apparently, after everything that happened with the Lantern Corps, Kara has brought Kal to a version of Krypton… but it’s not the original. She’s actually built a new Krypton, a beautiful city made of energy, to protect them both and help them deal with losing their home. It sounds amazing, but she’s realizing it’s not a real solution – she’d be living a fake life. Thankfully, it looks like a mischievous little imp from another dimension is going to shake things up and help her see things differently!

DC Comics has announced that Supergirl will be wielding a Blue Lantern ring in the upcoming Supergirl: Survive series. This makes her, as a member of the Superman family, an ideal candidate to use one. Details for the first three issues have been released, with issue #3 specifically confirming her use of the ring.

Supergirl Stuns in This New Elseworld Variation

With a new Supergirl series launching right before the upcoming movie hits cinemas this summer, it’s a fantastic time to be a fan of Kara Zor-El! First appearing in comics in 1958, Kara—known as the Woman of Tomorrow—is a hero in her own right, and much more than just Superman’s relative.

Supergirl has used a power ring from the Lantern Corps before. In a previous storyline called Red Daughter of Krypton, she wielded a red ring fueled by anger and even joined the Red Lantern Corps, led by Guy Gardner. Although the ring initially replaced her heart, she eventually managed to break free from its corrupting power.

With the introduction of different power rings, we’ve seen a wide variety of characters wield them, leading to some surprising pairings. Beyond the expected choices like Kilowag with a red ring or Hal Jordan with a white one, we’ve also witnessed unexpected events, such as Batman being brought back to life by a black ring and Lex Luthor harnessing the power of a yellow ring.

Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan, who often go by the nickname “The Supple Boiz” (a holdover from their podcasting days), started out creating the podcast Steg-Man and His Amazing Friends. After working at KLC Press, they transitioned to writing comic books. They’re now best known for their Image Comics series Kill Your Darlings, which features artwork by Bob Quinn (known for Knights of X) and John J. Hill (Vanish).

Supergirl: Survive is available on June 3 wherever comic books are sold.
