Kevin Costner’s Epic Western Lands New Streaming Home As Sequel Awaits Release

Kevin Costner‘s epic and extremely divisive Western has found its home.

Kevin Costner has enjoyed a long and successful career as an actor, director, and producer. He rose to fame in the 80s and 90s with memorable performances in films like The Bodyguard and The Untouchables. He’s particularly known for Dances with Wolves, which he directed and starred in, and which won seven Academy Awards.

After almost two years, Kevin Costner’s Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, is now streaming on Prime Video. Costner directed, co-wrote, and stars in the film, which has received mixed reactions from critics. The story follows Hayes Ellison, a cowboy on the run in 1859, traveling from Wyoming to Kansas with a woman and a child after being involved in a murder.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 starred Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Abbey Lee, Will Patton, Jena Malone, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Jeff Fahey, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, David O’Hara, Scott Haze, Tom Payne, Jaime Campbell Bower, and Michael Anganaro.

The new three-hour Western film is getting mixed reviews. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 51% rating, while audiences scored it higher at 70%. This first installment in Costner’s planned series is among his lowest-rated films, comparable to titles like Dragonfly (7%), The Postman (14%), and 3000 Miles to Graceland (15%). Reviewers have described Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 as being slow and lacking significant strengths.

I was so excited to hear that Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 had a screening at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival this year! It’s a shame, though, that it’s still waiting for a proper release in theaters. I understand the first film didn’t do as well as hoped, and that’s put everything on hold. It’s a really ambitious project – Kevin Costner is planning four movies in total – and it’s been a long wait, with only the first chapter finally coming out after two years. I really hope the studio decides to give the rest of the saga the release it deserves!

The first film in the series earned over $38 million globally, but with a production cost of $100 million, it was a significant financial disappointment for the acclaimed writer, director, and producer. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for the remaining three movies in the Western series.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is available to stream on Prime Video.
