The new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, boasts a huge cast of familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it sounds like we might see even more heroes appear than we currently expect.
Alan Cumming is returning to the role of Nightcrawler, a character he last played in the 2003 film X2: X-Men United. He’ll be joined by other actors from the original X-Men movies, like Patrick Stewart, who’s reprising his role as Professor Charles Xavier, and Ian McKellen as Magneto.
Alan Cumming recently told Deadline in an interview that the creators of Doomsday intentionally kept some characters secret from the cast and crew during production, suggesting there are still unexpected reveals to come.

It was wonderful revisiting the role after so long, because I’m very fond of the character,” he explained. “And this movie is just packed with superheroes – there are so many, it’s hard to follow them all!”
Superhero movie scripts can be tough to get through. They’re mostly just a series of action scenes and character names, and a lot of the characters have really complicated, two-part names.

Sometimes, the script used code names for characters they wanted to keep as a surprise, disguising their return with different names. It made things really complicated.
It’s likely some characters Marvel kept hidden during filming have now been revealed. However, knowing Marvel’s fondness for surprises, we can probably anticipate a few unexpected faces still to appear.

During the interview, Cumming also briefly mentioned the difficult production of X2 – a topic he’s addressed before – and said, “There were things that happened on that set that really shocked me.”
He explained how he had a much more positive experience this time around.
“I really liked the people. The brothers who directed it. And everyone was so nice”, he said.
We filmed it at Pinewood Studios, and I need to do a little more shooting there. I haven’t been doing a lot of filming lately, but this project was really enjoyable, and it was good to revisit it.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on 18 December 2026.
