A popular series featuring Matthew Lillard is about to reach a new generation of viewers.
Matthew Lillard first gained recognition for his role as Stu Macher in the 1996 film Scream, but he’s also become known for appearing in many popular franchises, like video game movies and other horror films. Now, with several new projects on the horizon, one of his most beloved roles is getting a new life on a major streaming service.
The live-action Scooby-Doo movies from the early 2000s are coming to Netflix this summer. Both films will be available to stream in the U.S. starting June 1st.
As a big fan of Scooby-Doo, I was really excited when they finally brought the Mystery Incorporated gang to the big screen! Matthew Lillard was absolutely perfect as Shaggy in both Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. Those films, directed by Raja Gosnell and written by James Gunn, were the first time I felt like the characters truly came to life on film.
The Scooby-Doo movies featured Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred, and Linda Cardellini as Velma. Neil Fanning provided the voice for Scooby-Doo himself, and the two films together earned over $456 million worldwide.
| Scooby-Doo Movie Title | Domestic Box Office | International Box Office | Worldwide Box Office | Rotten Tomatoes Score | Audience Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scooby-Doo (2002) | $153.2 Million | $122.3 Million | $275.6 Million | 32% | 41% |
| Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) | $84.2 Million | $97 Million | $181.2 Million | 22% | 42% |
Although a third Scooby-Doo movie never happened, the first two comedy-horror films have become beloved cult classics over the years. Thanks to DVD releases and now streaming services, new audiences continue to discover and enjoy them.
I’m really excited to hear that Damian Lillard is continuing to voice Shaggy! He’s done it for a lot of animated projects already, and now he’s teaming up with Frank Welker – the original voice of Scooby-Doo himself! They’re both going to be in this new anime called Yokoso Scooby-Doo! which is coming to Tubi. It’s awesome to see them working together on this!
Netflix’s decision arrives at an ideal moment, coinciding with their development of a live-action Scooby-Doo reboot. This new TV show will reveal how the iconic Mystery Incorporated team first formed, offering an origin story for Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Scooby-Doo.
Matthew Lillard, the original Shaggy from the Scooby-Doo franchise, recently told ScreenRant he’d be thrilled to be involved with the upcoming Netflix reboot. He expressed his willingness to offer advice and guidance to the actor who takes on the role of Shaggy, saying he believes the character is truly special and he’d be happy to help in any way he can.
Tanner Hagen will be playing Shaggy in the upcoming live-action movie, Scooby-Doo: Origins, which is currently being filmed in Atlanta, Georgia. The new film features Mckenna Grace as Daphne, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones, and Frank Welker will once again provide the voice for Scooby-Doo.
Damian Lillard is enjoying a successful year both in basketball and in acting. He recently reprised his role as Stu in Scream 7 and has joined the Marvel universe in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, playing the character Mr. Charles.
Shortly after the newest season finished streaming on Disney+, it was announced that Kaiju actor Jason Lillard will be working with director James Gunn again, this time as part of Gunn’s DC Universe. Though his specific part is still a secret, Lillard, known for his work on Scooby-Doo, is scheduled to appear in Man of Tomorrow, currently being filmed and slated for release in 2027.
Catch Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed on Netflix in the United States on June 1.
