A revival of a popular Cartoon Network show is coming to HBO Max in just a few weeks.
Cartoon Network is famous for its original animated shows that many people grew up watching, like The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Johnny Bravo. Now, another popular series from the network is getting a new life with a revival on streaming services.
HBO Max will start streaming Regular Show: The Lost Tapes on June 8th. This is just a few weeks after it first aired on Cartoon Network on May 11th.
The animated series Regular Show is back with The Lost Tapes, created by J.G. Quintel. This revival follows the same characters as the original, focusing on the everyday adventures of Mordecai, a blue jay, and Rigby, a raccoon, who work as groundskeepers at a local park. We also see what’s happening with familiar faces like their boss, Benson—who is a gumball machine—and the park owner, Pops, and other beloved characters.
Following the conclusion of Regular Show, The Lost Tapes centers on Pops’ experiences in the afterlife. The story is presented as a series of old VHS tapes Pops discovers, revealing a previously unknown adventure. This clever format lets the show revisit moments from the original series without creating a new, separate timeline. However, critics have had varying opinions on this approach.
Some viewers felt the new show, featuring the original Regular Show voice actors like Quintel, Salyers, Marin, and Hamill, leaned too heavily on the original series. Others appreciated that it successfully captured the spirit of Regular Show while also building out the world in fresh directions.
The release of The Lost Tapes as part of the Regular Show story is the newest development for this critically acclaimed series. It has earned numerous award nominations – seven Annie Awards and six Emmys – and even won an Emmy for the “Eggscellent” episode in season 3.
I was so excited when Regular Show got its own movie back in 2015! And now, even after all this time, they’re releasing Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, which is fantastic news. It’s a great opportunity for anyone who maybe didn’t catch it the first time to discover what a truly special and underrated show it is. I can’t wait to see what they’ve created!
