Be warned, this article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian and Grogu! The new installment has arrived, bringing back fan favorites like Din Djarin and Grogu, and introducing new characters to the Star Wars universe. One returning character is Rotta the Hutt, though he looks quite different now. Rotta is Jabba the Hutt’s son and was first seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars as a young Huttlet. In that story, he was kidnapped in a scheme involving his uncle, Ziro, and Count Dooku.
Jabba the Hutt was incredibly eager to get his son back, so he unexpectedly asked the Jedi for assistance. This led to Anakin Skywalker and his new apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, embarking on their first mission together: rescuing the baby and bringing him home. They successfully completed the task. Rotta, Jabba’s son, only appeared once between the Clone Wars movie and The Mandalorian, featuring in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series as a young Huttlet who enjoyed eating butterflies.
Okay, so I was pretty surprised by Rotta in The Mandalorian and Grogu. We’ve seen a lot of Hutts in Star Wars, and they’re usually… well, let’s just say not known for their physique. But Rotta? This guy was massive and muscular, like a gladiator! While I actually ended up really liking the character, it took a while to adjust to seeing a buff Hutt. It just felt… unexpected, and honestly, a little goofy at first.
Rotta Looks Nothing Like The (On Screen) Hutts Audiences Have Seen
Before Rotta the Hutt appeared in The Mandalorian and Grogu, Hutts were usually portrayed the same way in movies and TV shows: as large, slow, and slimy creatures, much like Jabba the Hutt in the original Star Wars trilogy. Return of the Jedi really emphasized how unsettling and repulsive Hutts could be, especially with Jabba’s treatment of Princess Leia. But Rotta breaks that mold, appearing as a strong and quick fighter instead.
While a muscular Hutt isn’t entirely new – Jabba’s cousin, Bokku, was portrayed as powerfully built in the comics – Rotta’s physique was a surprising change for the on-screen depiction of Hutts. Despite some exciting action scenes, like his final fight with the Twins, it was hard to take Rotta seriously because of his unusual appearance.
Rotta’s voice actually detracted from the character. Unlike Jabba the Hutt, who had a powerful, distinctive voice and laugh, Rotta sounded like an ordinary man. While Jeremy Allen White’s voice was lowered in pitch, it was still recognizable as his own. This contrast between his normal voice and Rotta’s imposing physique just didn’t quite fit.
Rotta Became A Great Character, But This Still Felt Goofy
It’s too bad The Mandalorian and Grogu didn’t really utilize Rotta’s strong physical presence, because he turned out to be a surprisingly great character. Before the story unfolded, it was hard to picture him working well, and the connection to Jabba the Hutt felt a little unnatural at first. However, Rotta ultimately proved to be a genuinely heroic and endearing character who became a good companion for Din Djarin and Grogu.
The connection between the character and Grogu was surprisingly endearing, challenging typical expectations for a Hutt. The movie handled this much better than it did with the Hutt’s imposing physique or unusually ordinary voice. However, despite the strong character work throughout the film, they couldn’t quite overcome the fact that this muscular Hutt still came across as silly on screen.
