Luke Skywalker is a truly memorable hero in film history. Mark Hamill has brilliantly played Luke since the original 1977 film, Episode IV — A New Hope, and has made the character incredibly compelling. Luke starts as an unlikely hero, but his kindness and willingness to fight for others help him become a powerful force for good throughout the galaxy.

Throughout the first three Star Wars films, Luke Skywalker trains and becomes a legendary Jedi. While few Jedi are as well-known as Luke, a few others have actually become more powerful. Luke is undeniably a strong Jedi, but this list highlights five who ultimately surpassed him in terms of power.

Rey Skywalker is a Divisive Character, But She Is Extremely Powerful

Rey is the central character in the recent Star Wars trilogy, first appearing in The Force Awakens (2015). Her journey closely resembles Luke Skywalker’s, intentionally echoing his path to defeat Darth Vader and the Empire. While some viewers have criticized her as being overly perfect, Rey ultimately becomes one of the most powerful Jedi in the Star Wars saga.

Before The Force Awakens, Rey hadn’t encountered a Jedi or witnessed the Force in action, but it quickly becomes clear she has a natural connection to it. Throughout the sequel trilogy, Rey learns to use her powers, training with both Luke and Leia to become strong enough to confront Kylo Ren and the First Order.

Rey’s immense power comes from two main sources. First, she discovers she’s not just an ordinary person, but has a significant family history. Second, she forms a unique connection with Kylo Ren through the Force. This connection allows her to learn from his skills and experience, helping her quickly become a powerful Force user.

Mace Windu Created His Own Lightsaber Form

Mace Windu, played by Samuel L. Jackson, is a highly skilled Jedi Master and sits on the Jedi High Council. He’s easily recognizable thanks to his unique purple lightsaber – no other Jedi uses that color! While often overshadowed in the broader history of the Jedi, many consider Mace Windu to be one of the most powerful Jedi ever shown in the Star Wars films.

Mace Windu is best known for creating and perfecting Vaapad, a very forceful style of lightsaber fighting. Vaapad works by channeling Windu’s own inner darkness – a part of everyone, but typically avoided by Jedi – and blending it with the anger of whoever he’s fighting. This allows Windu to tap into the power of the dark side without actually becoming corrupted by it. He essentially walks a line between light and dark, giving him an advantage over opponents who strictly follow only one path.

Mace Windu was a powerful Jedi Master known for his unique Force ability, Shatterpoint. This allowed him to find the weaknesses of anyone he fought by deeply connecting with the Force – something many Jedi find difficult. His strong moral compass helped him maintain this unwavering connection. He was also skilled at turning his opponents’ attacks against them, famously reflecting Palpatine’s Force lightning back at the Sith Lord.

Obi-Wan Kenobi was Anakin Skywalker’s Mentor During His Time in the Jedi Order

Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor, is a fan favorite character in the Star Wars saga. His selfless sacrifice in A New Hope ensures Luke Skywalker and his companions can escape and continue the fight against the Empire. While Obi-Wan was always a respected Jedi, Ewan McGregor’s portrayal in the prequel films – initially as Qui-Gon Jinn’s apprentice and later as a Jedi Master – significantly boosted his popularity with audiences.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Everyone knows he trained Anakin Skywalker, but it’s amazing to think that Obi-Wan was just a learner himself when he first met Anakin. He promised Qui-Gon Jinn he’d look after him, and that drove Obi-Wan to become a master Jedi and take on an apprentice way earlier than usual. What really sets Obi-Wan apart, I think, is his incredible self-control. It wasn’t always that way, though! Apparently, he used to struggle with his emotions, especially anger, and he really had to work at mastering that – much more than most Jedi, it seems.

Obi-Wan masters a defensive fighting style, becoming renowned for his ability to deflect attacks and wait for opponents to slip up. He also has a unique connection to the Force. Instead of trying to control it, he lets the Force flow through him, acting as a channel for its power.

Yoda Served as the Grand Master of the Jedi Order for Over 200 Years

It’s no surprise to find Master Yoda on this list. He’s a central figure in the Star Wars saga, and it would be a major omission not to mention him. Yoda belongs to a secretive, long-living species naturally gifted with a strong connection to the Force. He also has an exceptionally high number of Midichlorians – tiny lifeforms that measure a person’s ability to connect with the Force, making him incredibly powerful.

Yoda’s incredible strength is partly due to his long lifespan. As a species that can live for centuries, he’s had 900 years to train and perfect his abilities. We see a glimpse of this potential in The Mandalorian (2019-Present) and The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) with Grogu, another member of the same species. Even at just 50 years old, Grogu is already demonstrating significant power, showing how much growth can happen in a few decades – and Yoda has had nine centuries to develop his skills.

Through years of training, meditation, and studying the Force, Yoda developed a profound connection with it, understanding it on a level few Jedi could reach. He was also unwavering in his commitment to the Light Side, never giving in to the temptations of the Dark Side.

Anakin Skywalker was the Most Powerful Jedi Before His Fall to the Dark Side

It’s hard to imagine anyone surpassing Anakin Skywalker on this list. He was originally known as the Chosen One, destined to bring balance to the Force, and he ultimately fulfilled that prophecy by defeating Emperor Palpatine and saving his son, Luke, in Return of the Jedi (1983). Even before his fall to the dark side – which actually amplified his power – Anakin was an exceptionally gifted Jedi.

Anakin Skywalker is unique – he was conceived without a biological father. The Force itself brought him into being, intending for him to play a crucial role in the galaxy. With the Force as his parent, it’s hard to imagine anyone becoming a more powerful Jedi. He also has an unprecedentedly high number of midichlorians, even more than Master Yoda. This, combined with his ability to foresee events, allowed Anakin to learn and master skills rapidly and consistently.

Anakin’s biggest flaw was his difficulty controlling his emotions, particularly fear and anger. Combined with his overconfidence from being exceptionally talented, it’s easy to see how Palpatine was able to turn him to the dark side. While Anakin was remarkably powerful, even surpassing many Jedi Masters, this also contributed to the tragedy of Order 66. The clone troopers struggled with Jedi who were skilled, but Anakin was in a league of his own, making him a particularly easy target.
