The popular TV show is coming back to Fox in January, and Stephen Amell will be one of the main actors. Production has begun, and Amell just released a short trailer giving fans their first look at his new superhero character.
Amell shared a video on social media with the caption, “I love playing superheroes.” He’s playfully referencing his role as a lifeguard – someone who rescues people in the water. The video includes a quick shot of Amell running towards the ocean, looking focused and determined, and you can see he’s not wearing a shirt. Watch it below!
Stephen Amell Is Playing Hobie Buchannon
The new Baywatch series takes place in the same world as the original. It centers on Hobie, the son of Mitch Buchannon, who has now taken over as captain of Baywatch. The story begins when Hobie learns he has a daughter, Jessica Belkin, who wants to become a lifeguard. This adds a family element to the show, but viewers can still expect all the classic Baywatch action, like daring rescues and exciting beach scenes.
Okay, so get this – Baywatch is coming back, and they’re bringing back some familiar faces! David Chokachi is reprising his role as Cody Madison, and Erika Eleniak is back as Shauni McClain, which is awesome. But it’s not just the old guard – the cast is getting a serious refresh with some exciting new additions. We’re talking Shay Mitchell from Pretty Little Liars, Hassie Harrison who you might recognize from Yellowstone, Brooks Nader from Love Thy Nader, and even TikTok star Noah Beck and gymnast Livvy Dunne. Behind the scenes, Matt Nix, the guy who brought us Burn Notice, is running the show, and McG – yes, the McG from Charlie’s Angels – is directing the first episode. It’s shaping up to be a fun mix of nostalgia and new energy!
Stephen Amell Lands His Next Major Role
Stephen Amell’s comments about superheroes likely refer to his role as Oliver Queen in the popular CW series Arrow, which launched the larger Arrowverse. He also appeared in a show that lasted two seasons. Most recently, he led the cast of the Suits spin-off, Suits: LA, but it was cancelled after one season. There’s optimism that his new Baywatch project will have a longer run.
When Stephen Amell was cast, Nix stated he immediately brought the perfect qualities for this new version of Baywatch: genuine emotion, powerful energy, and classic hero appeal. She explained he’s a lead actor who can handle both the action and the emotional depth, all while keeping things entertaining, and the team was eager to begin working with him.
The show was officially greenlit for its first season last fall, but development actually began in 2024. The first season will have 12 episodes. McG and Nix are leading the production team, along with Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto, and Mike Horowitz.
The new Baywatch will in January 2027.
