Although the BBC drama Two Weeks in August is set on a beautiful Greek island with an air of mystery and underlying conflict, it wasn’t actually filmed there. Instead, the production team chose Malta and Gozo as the filming locations to recreate the Mediterranean setting.
Often called the British version of The White Lotus due to its lavish location and unfolding drama, the show centers on a group of longtime friends whose perfect vacation quickly descends into chaos as old grudges and secrets are revealed.
The series follows Zoe, played by Jessica Raine, a teacher and mother who goes on vacation with her husband, Dan (Damien Molony), and a group of old friends she’s lost touch with over time.
What starts as a pleasant get-together soon falls apart when a surprise kiss puts the whole group on edge. The show features Jessica and Damien, along with returning cast members including Nicholas Pinnock, Antonia Thomas, Leila Farzad, and Hugh Skinner.

So, the show is supposed to take place on a made-up Greek island, but as a gamer who checked out the behind-the-scenes stuff, I found out they actually filmed everything in Malta and Gozo throughout 2025! A local company called Pellikola helped them out with production, which is pretty cool.

Catherine Shepherd, the creator of the series, initially wanted to film in Greece. However, Malta was chosen instead because it was more affordable, though it wasn’t a simple decision. Shepherd told The Independent that Gozo, an island of Malta, proved to be an ideal location thanks to its dramatic and wild scenery.
The team needed to find a beach that felt like a secluded cove, and they found the perfect spot on the island of Gozo. While filming there was challenging due to the island’s size and the need to house the crew, it was essential to capture the desolate look required for certain scenes. Fans can see Gozo’s famous Dwerja cliffs – a landmark on the western coast – in the third episode.
As a huge fan, I was so impressed by the locations! They filmed a lot of the harbour and market scenes at Mgarr ix-Xini, this gorgeous little bay on Gozo with really stunning cliffs. And that tavern you see a lot in the show? That was filmed at Ghar Lapsi, a beautiful bay in Malta that’s super popular with people who love to swim and snorkel. It really added to the atmosphere!

One of the most surprising things about the show is that the stunning villa featured in the series wasn’t an actual rental property. The production team largely built the villa themselves, creating it from scratch.
The house featured in the film Two Weeks in August wasn’t built in one place. It was put together using parts from different locations, and a new section was built specifically near the cliffs in southern Malta. After filming finished, most of the house was taken apart.
Catherine Shepherd explained that it was hard to find the perfect house because of the unique style of Maltese buildings. She noted that designer Jon Henson, whom she praised as ‘really amazing,’ faced the challenge of finding a property that didn’t feel too different from the Greek aesthetic they were aiming for. Maltese houses, while beautiful with their sandstone construction, don’t naturally have that Greek look.
The team located a small farmhouse that would become the starting point for the villa’s construction. However, it required significant renovations. “It was quite small and lacked a pool, so he decided to add one,” Catherine remembered.

Man, building that villa was a massive undertaking – a real engineering challenge, honestly. But it’s all history now. We had to completely tear it down, the pool, the kitchen, everything. Now it’s just back to being a small farmhouse, which is kind of wild to think about.
Although the show looks like it was filmed in warm, sunny Mediterranean weather, the actual filming conditions were quite cold. Jessica Raine revealed that the cast often struggled with the surprisingly low temperatures. She even said, “We filmed in early March, and I’ve never been colder, even after filming in Iceland!”
The actors and crew found a clever solution to stay warm while filming in summer outfits: they wore layers of thermal underwear underneath! Jessica recalls a birthday party scene filmed early on where everyone was bundled up with thermals and even carried hot water bottles, all hidden under their costumes.
Two Weeks in August airs this Saturday, 23 May, from 9pm on BBC One.
