Michael Jackson Biopic Hits Unprecedented Box Office Milestone In Week 5

Michael is certified platinum at the box office.

The new movie Michael, a biopic about the life of Michael Jackson, has become a global hit, earning over $700 million worldwide. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the iconic singer, the film features a supporting cast including Colman Domingo, Miles Teller, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, and Mike Myers. While the movie focuses on Jackson’s career, it doesn’t directly address the allegations of child sexual abuse made against him. It’s now the second highest-grossing music biopic ever, trailing only 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $902.6 million.

According to Deadline, the movie Michael is expected to earn $18.5 million over the three-day weekend and $23.6 million over the entire Memorial Day holiday. This would bring its total domestic earnings to $317.8 million. Importantly, the film is only dropping about 29% in viewership from last week, and it’s set to become the first music biopic to ever reach $300 million domestically over a traditional three-day weekend.

While it hasn’t yet earned as much worldwide as Bohemian Rhapsody, Michael has already made more money in North America than that film did – exceeding its $216.4 million domestic total and becoming the top-earning music biopic in the region.

With its continued success in the US, the movie Michael is quickly approaching a spot among the top 100 highest-grossing films of all time (without adjusting for inflation). This weekend, it’s expected to earn more domestically than several popular movies, including Star Wars: Return of the Jedi ($316.6 million), Independence Day ($306.2 million), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ($305.4 million), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($302.3 million), and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($300.8 million). This will move it to No. 106 on the list, just behind Iron Man ($319 million).

To break into the Top 100 highest-grossing movies, the film just needs to surpass the $324.6 million earned by 2018’s Deadpool 2. That means earning about $6.8 million more, which it’s expected to do easily. If it performs similarly to its previous weeks, it could earn around $13 million this weekend, bringing its total to over $330 million. This would place it at No. 94, between Forrest Gump ($330.4 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy ($333.7 million).
