If you’d rather stay cool indoors this Bank Holiday weekend and skip a trip to the cinema – even for new movies like The Mandalorian and Grogu or Finding Emily – there are lots of great films available to watch on regular TV.
Whether you’re in the mood for a gripping drama starring Toby Jones, an exciting Bruce Willis action movie, a beloved ’80s family film, or a beautifully animated modern classic, we have something for everyone.
Digital Spy has looked through the TV listings to choose eight great movies showing on BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 this Bank Holiday weekend.
Shrek

It might make you feel a little older, but the movie Shrek is turning 25! If you’re not planning a trip to the cinema to celebrate, you can watch the beloved animated film on BBC One this Saturday afternoon.
Planning a Shrek movie marathon for the long weekend? Good news – all four main Shrek films are now available on Netflix!
Shrek airs on Saturday 23 May at 4.10pm on BBC One
What to Read Next
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Both a nostalgic favorite and a current hit, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is playing Saturday afternoon. Like the Spider-Verse films, it’s easily one of the best animated movies released recently.
This new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie will bring back fond memories for longtime fans and introduce a new generation to these pizza-loving heroes. And it’s not just our opinion – Mutant Mayhem has a fantastic 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem airs on Saturday 23 May at 4.40pm on Channel 4
My Week with Marilyn

A movie about a behind-the-scenes assistant spending a week with Marilyn Monroe while she filmed ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’ doesn’t immediately sound exciting, but My Week with Marilyn truly delivers thanks to its fantastic actors.
Okay, so I just heard about this movie and it sounds amazing! Michelle Williams is playing Marilyn Monroe, which is a huge role, and Eddie Redmayne is playing a guy who helped out on the set of The Misfits. But the cast doesn’t stop there – Toby Jones, Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi, Judi Dench, and even Jim Carter are all in it! Seriously, with a lineup like that, I’m definitely adding this to my watchlist.
My Week with Marilyn airs on Saturday 23 May at 11.20pm on BBC Two
The Goonies

We haven’t received any recent news about the highly anticipated sequel, first announced in February 2025. Until then, we can always enjoy The Goonies – it’s a great film to watch on a Bank Holiday!
This beloved movie from the 80s is perfect for the whole family. No matter how many times you’ve seen it, it’s a timeless adventure that still feels fresh and exciting.
The Goonies airs on Sunday 24 May at 1.05pm on ITV1
Some Like It Hot

For a classic film experience, catch Some Like It Hot on BBC Two this Sunday afternoon. Much like The Goonies, this crime comedy starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon remains enjoyable even today.
Often hailed as one of the funniest and most beloved American films ever made, Some Like It Hot is a true classic. As we mark the 100th birthday of Marilyn Monroe on June 1st, it’s the perfect moment to revisit one of her most iconic performances.
Some Like It Hot airs on Sunday 24 May at 2.15pm on BBC Two
She Said

Looking for a compelling and impactful film this weekend? Check out She Said. It’s the true story of the New York Times reporters who bravely revealed Harvey Weinstein’s pattern of sexual abuse and misconduct.
The film is tough to watch at times, but Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan deliver powerful performances as journalists Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor. It also features a talented supporting cast, including a memorable final appearance by the late Andre Braugher.
She Said airs on Sunday 24 May at 11pm on Channel 4
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret

Adapting a well-loved book is always a challenge, particularly one with childhood memories attached. However, the 2023 film version of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret succeeded beautifully, earning a remarkable 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Abby Ryder Fortson plays Margaret in this film, with Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates as her mother, Barbara, and grandmother, Sylvia. The story follows their adjustment to suburban life in New Jersey during 1970.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret airs on Sunday 24 May at 10pm on BBC Two
Die Hard 4.0

Let’s be honest, Die Hard 4.0 (or Live Free or Die Hard as it’s known in the US) isn’t as good as the original Die Hard films, or even the third one for some viewers. But if you’re looking for some simple, exciting action to watch, it’s a decent choice.
Just in case you’ve forgotten, Live Free or Die Hard – the fourth film in the series – features John McClane (played by Bruce Willis) joining forces with a computer hacker (Justin Long) to prevent a cybercriminal (Timothy Olyphant) from launching an attack that could shut down all of America’s essential systems.
Die Hard 4.0 airs on Monday 25 May at 10.15pm on ITV1
As a huge movie and TV buff, I’m so excited they’ve put together a Streaming Guide! It’s a lifesaver – I can quickly see exactly which streaming services have all my favorite shows and movies. Definitely check it out if you’re tired of endlessly searching!
