After the current season ends, Rick and Morty will return for three more, and according to showrunner Scott Marder, work on future episodes is progressing well.
The latest season of Rick and Morty launched this weekend to rave reviews, less than a year after the previous season ended. It’s set to wrap up in late June, and good news for fans: Adult Swim has already renewed the show through season 12! While we won’t see those future seasons for a while, the team behind the show is making great headway on them.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon shared that they’re already well into developing material for future seasons – essentially, they have plans mapped out through season 12. If the show continues to release new seasons about once a year, that means fans can expect to see what they’re currently working on around 2029.
It’s not unusual for Rick and Morty to have its future planned out well in advance, instead of renewing each season individually. Back in May 2018, just seven months after season 3 ended, Adult Swim announced a deal for 70 additional episodes.
According to Marder, the next three seasons of Rick and Morty are progressing well. He and co-creator Dan Harmon also revealed they’re working on a Rick and Morty movie. Jacob Hair, the supervising director, will direct the film, which Harmon playfully compared to having ‘the director version of Donald Glover’ at the helm. It’s currently unknown whether the movie will be shown in theaters, on Adult Swim, or exclusively on HBO Max.
I first discovered Rick and Morty when it debuted on December 2nd, 2013, and I was instantly hooked by the chaotic duo of Rick, the wildly inventive (and often drunk) scientist, and his anxious grandson, Morty. It’s fascinating to learn the show actually started as a series of animated shorts parodying Back to the Future – Justin Roiland made them after his previous show, House of Cosbys, ended. And get this – years before the show blew up, Christopher Lloyd, the original Doc Brown, actually played Rick in some live-action shorts, with Jaeden Martell (you might know him from Knives Out) as Morty! It’s a really cool bit of history for fans like me.
After Justin Roiland was let go, Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden stepped in to voice Rick and Morty. The show also stars Chris Parnell as Jerry, Morty’s dad; Sarah Chalke as both Morty’s mom, Beth, and her clone, Space Beth; and Spencer Grammer as Morty’s sister, Summer.
It’s been 13 years since Rick and Morty first aired, and the show has grown into a full-fledged franchise with spin-offs, web series, comics, and video games. According to Keith David, a new spin-off series focusing on his character, President Curtis, is coming out later this year. Plus, season 9 of Rick and Morty will be available on Hulu and HBO Max, as well as on Adult Swim every Sunday night, starting June 15th – a couple of months sooner than expected.
