Women’s basketball is finally getting the queer rom-com it deserves.
I’m hearing some exciting news out of Run-A-Muck – they’re making a rom-com called “Courtside,” and it’s all set in the world of professional basketball. What really caught my attention is the casting – they’ve landed some serious WNBA talent! Deadline reports that WNBA All-Star Gabby Williams, two-time champion Sydney Colson, and 2022 champion Theresa Plaisance are all set to appear. It’s fantastic to see real athletes getting a chance to shine on screen, and I’m definitely intrigued to see how this one plays out.
Colson recently posted on Instagram, saying that if you enjoyed movies like ‘Love & Basketball,’ ‘Bend It Like Beckham,’ and ‘Bring It On’ and wished they had more LGBTQ+ representation, you’re in luck! He confirmed that those stories could definitely be reimagined with a more queer perspective.
I’m so excited to see what Aja Wilson and the team have created with ‘Courtside’! It’s amazing to learn that Aja isn’t just a phenomenal basketball player – she was a star at Texas A&M and even got drafted into the WNBA back in 2011 – but she’s also a producer on the show. What a multi-talented athlete!
The upcoming movie, written by Brittani Nichols (from “Abbott Elementary”) and directed by Carly Usdin, tells the story of a talented women’s basketball player striving for a championship. Her plans get complicated when she unexpectedly falls in love with a member of her team, all while dealing with injuries.

A new documentary about her life is being released this Friday, coinciding with the NCAA tournament she dominated in her playing days. The former WNBA star wants everyone to know she’s not slowing down anytime soon.
As someone who’s followed Colson’s work, I can really feel his passion for this project! He shared that making this movie is a dream come true, especially since basketball was such a big part of his childhood. He often talked about how much it would have meant to him to see a story like his own on the big screen when he was younger, and that’s exactly what he’s hoping to achieve now – creating something relatable and meaningful for others. He’s genuinely thrilled to be part of a team dedicated to bringing those kinds of authentic stories to life.
Colsen and Plaisance were teammates on the 2022 Las Vegas Aces championship team, and now they co-host a podcast and star in the comedy show “The Syd + TP Show.” Meanwhile, Williams plays for both the Golden State Valkyries and the French national team.
Nichols shared with Deadline that she’s thrilled to see so much buzz around women’s basketball, something she’s waited for her entire life. She’s eager to combine her passions for sports, playful romantic dynamics, and humor in this new project. Jennifer Beals, known for her work on “The L Word” and as co-founder of Run-A-Muck, is also set to be involved.
