Be warned, this contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 3 of Dutton Ranch! Only three episodes in, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) are dealing with a major problem that could change their lives in South Texas. After a fire destroyed their Montana ranch, Beth and Rip relocated to Rio Paloma to start over, purchasing a ranch to raise black angus cattle.
Beth, Rip, and Carter (Finn Little) are finding it tough to settle into life in Texas. Between the scorching heat and the conflict Beth is facing from a competing ranch, 10-Petals, led by the powerful Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening), Texas hasn’t exactly been a warm welcome. And 19-year-old Carter isn’t thrilled with his new high school in Rio Paloma either.
As a big fan of the show, I’ve noticed Rip’s got a lot on his plate, even with a smaller operation than the main Dutton Ranch. He brought on Zachariah, played by Marc Menchaca, who reminds me a lot of Walker – that same kind of ranch hand vibe. But honestly, none of us could have seen the serious trouble heading for the Duttons that popped up in episode 3. It was a real shocker!
Foot & Mouth Disease In Dutton Ranch Explained
In episode 3 of Dutton Ranch, Beth and Rip discovered their black angus cattle are sick with foot-and-mouth disease. Everett McKinney, the veterinarian from Rio Paloma and a recent friend of Beth’s, confirmed the diagnosis. This is a major problem for the Dutton-Wheelers, as they were planning to start a business selling high-quality beef directly from their ranch.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a very contagious viral infection that affects livestock like cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs. It causes fever and painful blisters in the mouth and on the feet. At Dutton Ranch, the cows that contracted the disease showed severe symptoms, foaming at the mouth and developing hoof blisters that ruptured before they died.
As a vet on screen, Everett McKinney points out a pretty shocking fact: it had been fifty years since anyone saw a foot and mouth disease outbreak. He’s understandably baffled how the Dutton Ranch cattle could’ve gotten infected. But Rip, ever the observant one, quickly figures it out. Remember that bull he and Beth bought for ten grand back in episode two? That’s gotta be ground zero. It was just delivered and immediately put with the rest of the herd, so it’s the most likely source of the infection.
During season 5 of Yellowstone, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) moved the ranch’s cattle to Texas to avoid a brucellosis outbreak – a bacterial disease that can harm both animals and people. Rip and several ranch hands lived at the 6666 Ranch for several months to keep watch over the herd. Fortunately, foot-and-mouth disease only affects animals and isn’t a threat to humans.
Why FMD Is A Devastating Crisis For Beth & Rip In Dutton Ranch
As a huge fan of ‘Yellowstone,’ I was genuinely gutted when the Dutton Ranch cattle started getting sick with foot-and-mouth disease. It’s not just a setback, it feels like everything Rip and Beth have been working towards is on the line. They were finally getting their beef business off the ground, and Beth had even landed a fantastic deal to supply a really high-end steakhouse in Dallas. Seeing that threatened is just heartbreaking, because you know how much this ranch means to them – it’s their whole life!
Foot-and-mouth disease is rapidly spreading to the cattle on the Dutton Ranch. Beth and Rip are left with the heartbreaking decision to euthanize the entire herd, as there’s no time or resources to vaccinate them. Because the disease is already present among the cattle, isolating them isn’t an option. Unfortunately, eliminating the herd is the only course of action.
Losing the entire Dutton Ranch herd would be a financial disaster, costing millions. This comes right after Beth and Rip spent all their remaining money to purchase the Edwards Ranch in Rio Paloma. Just six months earlier, they’d already lost their previous ranch and most of their possessions in the Dillon, Montana fire.
The actual process of reducing the cattle herd is also a difficult consideration. Sadly, this will probably include having to euthanize the calf Beth and Rip saved from the Montana wildfire.
Beth and Rip haven’t had a chance to consider a worrying thought: was the sick bull they purchased deliberately sold to them? And could Beulah Jackson and the 10-Petals Ranch have attacked the Dutton Ranch to prevent Beth and Rip from starting a competing business?
The devastating foot-and-mouth disease outbreak at Dutton Ranch threatens to derail Beth and Rip’s fresh start as cattle ranchers in Texas.
