Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War. After eight years, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War finally portrays John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan in a way that’s more similar to Harrison Ford’s iconic depiction. Directed by Andrew Bernstein and co-written and produced by Krasinski himself, the film continues the story from the Prime Video Jack Ryan series and marks Krasinski’s first appearance as the character in a feature film since 2014.
Alec Baldwin initially played the character of Jack Ryan in the 1990 film The Hunt for Red October. However, Harrison Ford became widely known as the ultimate movie version of Jack Ryan with his performances in Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994). John Krasinski’s portrayal of Jack Ryan was heavily influenced by Ford’s depiction of a brave, determined, and morally upright hero.
In Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, Jack Ryan teams up with his friends James Greer and Mike November. They’re joined by MI6 agent Emma Marlow as they investigate a dangerous black ops unit called Starling. This unit was believed to be shut down decades ago by Greer, but is now being led by the cunning operative, Liam Crown.
Jack Ryan: Ghost War Copies Harrison Ford’s Clear & Present Danger
At the end of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, Jack has fully returned to the CIA and accepted the position of Deputy Director. Ryan reports to his new boss, James Greer, who is now the CIA Director. This echoes Clear and Present Danger when Admiral James Greer (James Earl Jones) was CIA Director, and named Harrison Ford’s Jack Ryan as Deputy Director, Intelligence.
However, Jack and James work side-by-side at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, and in the field in Prime Video’s Ryanverse. James Earl Jones’ Greer wasn’t a field operative, and he named Jack as Deputy Director to be his eyes and ears at Langley while he underwent cancer treatment in Clear and Present Danger.
Sadly, Jim Greer dies from cancer in Clear and Present Danger. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War does its own spin on the death of the CIA Director: Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel) is the victim of a car bomb intended for Greer. Wright’s death means James immediately replaces her as CIA Director.
I always loved how quickly Greer, played by Wendell Pierce, took Jack under his wing – it reminded me of James Earl Jones in Clear and Present Danger! It’s interesting because in season four of Jack Ryan, Ryan had actually left the CIA after becoming Deputy Director to Elizabeth Wright. But this time around, it felt different. Jack realized the agency was where he needed to be, and he actively chose to go back, taking on the Deputy role himself. It felt like a full-circle moment for his character.
Why It Took 8 Years For John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan To Become Like Harrison Ford’s
John Krasinski took on the role of Jack Ryan in 2018, but his portrayal on Prime Video differed significantly from previous versions of the Tom Clancy character. Krasinski’s Ryan was a younger, more action-oriented hero who frequently faced difficult, high-stakes decisions that could impact global events.
The Prime Video series Jack Ryan draws inspiration from the world created by Tom Clancy and previous movies, but doesn’t directly adapt any of his novels. John Krasinski’s portrayal of Jack Ryan significantly departs from the source material, particularly by reimagining the character’s personal life—he’s not married to Cathy Mueller (Abbie Cornish) in this version—and focuses on contemporary global conflicts rather than Cold War scenarios.
Despite “Tom Clancy” in the title, there is a continuous, concerted effort to make John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan distinctive, but still recognizably the hero Clancy created, in essence. Eight years, four seasons of TV, and a feature film later, it’s clear that Krasinski’s Jack Ryan won’t be doing what previous versions of the character have on-screen.
The success of John Krasinski’s Jack Ryan on Prime Video is largely due to being tailored to fit his vision as the star, writer, and producer. Krasinski has portrayed Jack Ryan for a longer period than any other actor, and he’s eager to continue in the role for many years to come.
Still, the iconic mold for Jack Ryan on-screen was best set by Harrison Ford, whose shadow still looms large over John Krasinski’s version. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War leans into Ford’s interpretation more than ever before, and Krasinski’s Ryan emerges even better for it.
