After five exciting seasons and seven years, the TV show The Boys has finished its run with a climactic showdown between Billy Butcher and Homelander. Throughout the show’s 40 episodes, Billy Butcher (played by Karl Urban) and Homelander (Anthony Starr) established themselves as formidable enemies. Butcher’s long fight to defeat the dangerous superpowered villain finally ended with Homelander’s demise in the series finale.
Throughout its five seasons, The Boys established Homelander as one of the most disturbing and frightening villains ever seen on TV. While it was a brutal but satisfying experience to watch his downfall in the Season 5 finale, “Blood and Bone,” the show hinted at this outcome back in 2019. Season 1 of The Boys presented Homelander as the perfect superhero, but also subtly suggested he would eventually abandon that image.
The Boys Season 1’s Darkest Moment Teased Homelander’s Future
The TV show The Boys first came out in July 2019, and it showed us the powerful company Vought and its group of superheroes, who are headed by Homelander. These heroes pretended to be selfless, but their carefully crafted public image began to crumble in Season 1, Episode 4, titled “The Female of the Species.”
Madelyn Stillwell, a Vought International executive (played by Elisabeth Shue), dispatched both Homelander and Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) to save the passengers on Transoceanic Flight 37 after it was hijacked, but the rescue didn’t go as smoothly as hoped.
Homelander and Queen Maeve eliminate the terrorists, but in the process, they damage the plane’s controls beyond repair, meaning it can’t land. Maeve wants to attempt a rescue to save passengers, but Homelander strongly objects and becomes aggressive, even threatening those who try to help themselves.
In the end, Homelander and Maeve jump from the plane, letting it crash. This surprising act hinted at a worsening mental state for both of them.
In the first season of The Boys, Homelander pretended to be a classic, all-American superhero, but that image began to crumble during the events on Transoceanic Flight 37. By Season 5, after a series of devastating events, he completely abandoned the pretense and openly proclaimed himself a god.
You know, it was fascinating to watch his whole persona shift mid-flight. He basically dropped the act of being the classic ‘good guy’ and started seeing himself as someone with absolute power – a leader, not a hero. It was a total 180, and really changed how you perceived everything that had happened before.
Homelander Finally Met His Fate in The Boys Season 5’s Finale
It was terrifying watching Homelander announce himself as a god to the whole world! He stood in the White House, of all places, and basically said he’d reward his ‘followers’ with love, but anyone who didn’t worship him would face a terrible fate – a truly awful death. It reminded me instantly of what he did to those people on Transoceanic Flight 37. It’s just… chilling to think about.
Ultimately, Homelander’s speech was cut short when Butcher and Kimiko intervened. With Ryan’s help, Butcher created a distraction, allowing Kimiko to hit Homelander with a blast of radiation that neutralized his powers. This gave Butcher the chance to deliver the final, fatal blow, avenging Frenchie and his deceased wife, Becca. The entire world watching lost all trust in Homelander as he was defeated, marking his complete downfall.
Homelander demonstrated a willingness to let millions die to maintain his power, consistently valuing his public image over genuine heroism. This pattern began in Season 1, Episode 4 of The Boys, when he allowed a plane to crash to protect his reputation instead of saving the people on board. It was always unrealistic to expect Homelander to truly be a hero.
Thankfully, Homelander never achieved his goal of becoming a truly terrifying and all-powerful leader, and many people recognized his instability even before he finished speaking. His death happened alongside those of several other Supes, including the Deep and Oh Father, and also marked the end of Butcher, who was killed by Hughie. Despite everything, his fate felt earned and provided a fitting end to the series.
