This story includes spoilers for the finale of “Survivor 50.”
Jeff Probst gave fans one last “Survivor” twist during the season finale, albeit accidentally.
During the live finale of “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans,” host Jeff Probst mistakenly revealed who lost a fire-making challenge before the segment actually aired. Because the challenges were filmed months earlier in Fiji, Probst unintentionally spoiled the outcome, announcing that contestant Rizo Velovic didn’t make it to the final three.
Watching the show, I always love when Jeff talks about the core of camp life – making fire! It’s like he’s hinting at something deeper. Then, right after that, he told Romeo he was the last person joining the jury, and invited him to come sit with the others. It was a pretty impactful moment, honestly.
Television
Jeff Probst, along with Survivor contestant Benjamin ‘Coach’ Wade and others, talk about the reasons why the CBS reality show has remained popular for over 25 years.
Jeff Probst suddenly stopped and looked around, asking what had just occurred. The contestants explained that the fire-making challenge hadn’t started yet. Clearly confused, Probst admitted to the audience, “I’m not even sure what’s going on,” and the show went to a commercial break.
When the show came back from break, Jeff Probst totally played off the mistake like it was all planned! He joked with the audience about how much he ‘loves doing live TV,’ which was a pretty smooth recovery, honestly. As a big Survivor fan, I have to admit, it was a funny moment even because of the mess-up.
Jeff Probst explained that the plan was to demonstrate fire-making, and then have Rizo, the person who lost, discuss how practice might have helped him win. However, they decided to do a surprise ‘Survivor’ twist – the final one of the season – called ‘A peek into the future.’ This means they’re going to show everyone Rizo losing the fire-making challenge to Jonathan.
Velovic competed against Joe Hunter, Jonathan Young, and Aubry Bracco in the final round. Aubry was ultimately named the Sole Survivor and won the $2 million prize. This finale marked the end of the highly anticipated 50th season, which featured returning players. In a first for the show’s 25-year run, viewers were able to influence decisions made by the production team.
Travel & Experiences
Jeff Probst, the host and executive producer of “Survivor,” loves spending his perfect day playing tennis, browsing for records at Freakbeat Records, and simply connecting with his family.
Contestant Benjamin “Coach” Wade told The Times in March that the show’s new format was a welcome surprise. He explained that ‘In the Hands of Fans’ changes the dynamic, making viewers feel like they’re part of the game instead of just watching it.
This season featured surprise appearances by celebrities like Billie Eilish and Sia. Notably, Mike White, who was a finalist on “Survivor” and created “The White Lotus,” also competed. He joined the finale remotely while filming season four of “The White Lotus” in France, and announced that “Survivor 50” contestants Charlie Davis and Kamilla Karthigesu will be in the next season of his show.
This isn’t the first time former “Survivor” contestants have appeared on “The White Lotus.” During season two, Angelina Keeley and Kara Kay, who were on “Survivor: David vs. Goliath” with him, had guest roles as hotel visitors. White says his time on “Survivor” actually helps him with his work on “The White Lotus.”
Jennifer Coolidge admitted feeling overwhelmed while filming ‘The White Lotus.’ Speaking at the ‘Survivor 50’ premiere, she explained the show’s nearly four-month shoot was challenging, but her previous experience on ‘Survivor’ reminded her she was capable of handling it.
