Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Boys’ series finale.
The finale of The Boys delivers a surprisingly satisfying conclusion by sticking to the most straightforward outcome: a final, violent showdown between Butcher and Homelander. While predictable, Butcher ultimately killing Homelander – proving even seemingly invincible figures can be defeated – felt incredibly earned. This finale avoids the pitfalls of disappointing series endings like those of Game of Thrones, How I Met Your Mother, and Dexter, which tried too hard to shock viewers instead of providing the natural conclusion the story deserved.
While the finale of The Boys doesn’t reach the heights of truly exceptional series endings like those of Breaking Bad and Six Feet Under, it’s still satisfying. It delivers on the payoff fans have anticipated throughout the show: Homelander finally faces a fittingly dark fate at the hands of the one supe who despises him most, and it’s as brutally satisfying as viewers have wanted for seven seasons. It’s the kind of conclusion Daenerys Targaryen should have had in the final season of Game of Thrones.
To be clear, I’m not suggesting Daenerys and Homelander are similar. While Daenerys became more ruthless later on, she wasn’t nearly as monstrous as Homelander, who was truly evil and a psychopath. What I mean is, Homelander’s ending was perfect – he got what he deserved. His story wrapped up nicely, revealing the insecure and weak man beneath his powers, and finally delivering justice for everyone he’d harmed, including Becca and Frenchie, over the show’s five seasons.
We haven’t seen many truly satisfying conclusions for beloved pop culture characters lately. Daenerys’s story felt unfinished due to poor writing, and the ending for Eleven in Stranger Things suffered from the same problem.
Homelander’s Fall From Grace Should’ve Been A Little Longer
While Homelander’s final moments were satisfying, they felt rushed – completed in just a couple of minutes. We see a quick flash of him losing his powers and a brief, desperate plea, but Butcher immediately ends it. After five seasons filled with drawn-out storylines and side characters, The Boys could have benefited from giving Homelander’s ending a bit more time to unfold.
After watching Homelander inflict so much violence for 40 hours, the show needed to explore his vulnerability for longer than just a few minutes. Antony Starr brilliantly portrayed the shift from an all-powerful, terrifying Homelander to a weak and desperate one, but that compelling side of him only appeared briefly in a single scene.
As a huge fan, the biggest letdown for me was how fast Daenerys’ turn happened. After watching her grow for eight seasons, it felt like a switch flipped and suddenly she was just… killing everyone. Seeing her on Drogon, burning innocent people, was shocking, but it didn’t feel earned. It could have worked if the show had slowly built up to that moment, if we’d seen what pushed her to that breaking point. But it felt rushed because the writers had finished the books to adapt and were just working with outlines from George R.R. Martin. They didn’t really expand on those outlines, they just sped through the main points, and honestly, it just didn’t feel right.
The finale of The Boys might have rushed things. While Homelander’s ending felt true to his character, the showdown with Butcher deserved more time to breathe. It had the potential to be a truly epic climax, similar to the ‘Ozymandias’ episode of Watchmen, setting up future storylines, but it felt like it ended too abruptly. An extra episode or two to explore the consequences would have been ideal.
