Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Boys season 5, episode 8.
The season finale of The Boys brought back a powerful weapon against superpowered individuals, three years after it first appeared in the series. The episode culminated in a major battle between Billy Butcher’s team and Homelander, filled with action sequences that are likely to improve audience reviews. Some viewers had previously felt that season 5 lacked enough tension.
The fight scenes were brutal, with casualties on both sides due to the diverse range of weapons used. Some of these weapons actually originated in the spin-off series, Gen V, which helped make up for the limited appearances of Gen V‘s characters. Season 5 of The Boys heavily features the Supe Virus, a concept first introduced in season 1 of Gen V.
Notably, the show Gen V introduced a new weapon against superpowered individuals. Though not as dangerous as the Supe Virus, it helps to level the playing field between those with powers and their human opponents. This weapon, called the Sonic Whistle, also appeared in episode 8 of The Boys season 5, marking its return to the series after three years.
The season finale of The Boys sees the team infiltrating the White House through a hidden network of tunnels. However, Father, aware of these passages, had prepared a trap, confining them to a small room. With armed guards positioned in the air vents and a high-pitched sonic weapon blasting, The Boys’ super-powered members were left defenseless.
Supes’ Weakness To Sound Was Established In Gen V Season 1
Okay, so let’s talk about the vulnerabilities of Supes, something we first started seeing in season one of Gen V. That’s where we learned about the Supe Virus, and it all ties back to Dean Shetty at Godolkin University. Turns out, she was running a secret lab under the school, basically experimenting on Supes to figure out what could bring them down. This led to the creation of the virus, but it wasn’t the only trick up her sleeve. She and her team also used something called the Sonic Whistle – it emits a super high-pitched sound that we humans can’t even detect, but for Supes, with their enhanced hearing, it’s incredibly debilitating. It’s a clever way to control them, and it really highlights just how sensitive their powers can be.
Okay, so let’s talk about the Sonic Whistle from Gen V. It’s a bit frustrating that The Boys didn’t bring it into play until now, in the season finale, considering it debuted in Gen V last year. But honestly? It’s a seriously effective weapon against Supes. I was genuinely worried during that finale – if Ashley hadn’t intervened and warned The Boys about Oh Father’s plan, that whistle would have absolutely worn Kimiko, Starlight, and Butcher down. Vought would have easily taken out Hughie and MM, and then the remaining Supes would have been next. It was a close call, and the whistle proved to be a real game-changer.
Why Hasn’t The Sonic Whistle Been Used More Often In The Boys?
Given how effective this weapon proved to be in both Gen V and The Boys, it’s puzzling why it hasn’t been used more in The Boys. The show is built around the team finding ways to fight Supes, so it seems logical that if they discovered the Supe Virus from Godolkin, they would have also created a portable version of the Sonic Whistle to help them win future fights.
Actually, there’s no real story reason why this happened, other than the idea that Vought controls all the remaining Sonic Whistles. But looking at it from a bigger picture, the Sonic Whistle might have made things too easy for The Boys. Like the Supe Virus, it would have needed a weakness – the virus had to be rebuilt and still didn’t work on all Supes – to create dramatic tension.
It’s harder to counteract weapons that directly affect a Supe’s senses. If The Boys had easy access to a device that could instantly weaken Supes, it would remove most of the tension from the story. Because of this, the show’s writers limited the use of the Sonic Whistle to that one scene in the finale.
