Okay, so after watching the second episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, it’s become pretty clear the show is laying the groundwork for a new romance that feels very familiar. It’s essentially a reimagining of the iconic Deanna Troi and Will Riker relationship from The Next Generation. And honestly, after a strong start – the premiere earned a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes and viewers seemed to really enjoy it on Paramount+ – I’m intrigued to see where this new pairing goes. It’s a smart move, leveraging nostalgia while building something fresh.

The second episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy began the new school year with a difficult meeting between Emrin Sadal, the President of Betazed (played by Anthony Natale), and Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) of the United Federation of Planets. The Federation hoped to convince Betazed to rejoin their alliance, but President Sadal was hesitant to end his planet’s policy of remaining separate from others.

Caleb Mir, played by Sandro Rosta, had a charming first encounter with Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner), who is both the President’s daughter and a prominent leader of Betazed’s young people. The connection between Caleb, a human, and Tarima, a Betazoid empath, is intentionally reminiscent of the relationship between Deanna Troi and Will Riker, a popular but largely untold love story from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Caleb Mir and Tarima Sadal feel like a fresh take on Will Riker and Deanna Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, though their story unfolds quite differently. While fans didn’t know the exact details of how Riker and Troi first met, it certainly didn’t involve someone attempting to leave Starfleet Academy by climbing a fence – unlike Caleb’s situation when he met Tarima.

I have to say, one of the smartest little moments in the recent Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode was Caleb’s line, “I escaped into therapy,” when he was being analyzed by Tarima. It was a really neat callback to Deanna Troi, the counselor who was such a key part of Star Trek: The Next Generation and served as the therapist aboard the Enterprise-D. Throughout the episode, Caleb and Tarima definitely developed a connection, even though they had a bit of a disagreement before things were smoothed over.

Although Star Trek: The Next Generation didn’t depict how Riker and Troi’s relationship began on Betazed, it was established that Will prioritized his Starfleet career, leading to their separation. Interestingly, in this new story, it’s Tarima who chooses a different path, creating distance between herself and Caleb. Instead of attending Starfleet Academy like Caleb, Tarima decides to enroll in the War College. They will still be in the same city – San Francisco – but as students at competing schools.

The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, will show a romantic relationship developing between a confident human male and a thoughtful Betazoid female, something Star Trek: The Next Generation didn’t explore. The Next Generation featured Riker and Troi as established adults, and their romance didn’t fully develop until after they left the USS Enterprise-D.

As a longtime fan, I’ve seen a lot of romances on Star Trek, but for me, Deanna Troi and Will Riker always stand out. It’s more than just the characters, though – the connection between Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis is truly special. You can just feel the genuine affection they have for each other, and it’s been clear ever since they first appeared on screen together back in 1987. That real-life chemistry is a huge part of why so many of us adore them as a couple.

The long wait for Riker and Troi to become a couple on Star Trek: The Next Generation actually built excitement among fans. After years of anticipation, Deanna and her soulmate, “Imzadi,” rekindled their relationship in Star Trek: Insurrection. They eventually married in Star Trek: Nemesis and then jointly commanded the USS Titan.

Will Riker and Deanna Troi have two children, but sadly, their oldest son, Thad, passed away. This loss caused a rift between them, which they begin to heal in season 3 of Star Trek: Picard. Their enduring love story is considered one of the best in the entire Star Trek universe.

I’m already captivated by Caleb Mir and Tarima Sadal, even though we just met them in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! It’s too early to say if their connection will last like Riker and Troi’s, but I’m loving that the series is exploring a similar dynamic with these two. I can’t help but wonder if Tarima will one day affectionately call her mischievous Caleb her “Imzadi” – it would be a beautiful echo of that classic Star Trek romance!
