Behind the Hype: How OPPO’s Find X9 Ultra Turned the Smartphone Into a Professional Camera

Something is quietly changing about the way moments get documented.

If you look at photography today – at exhibits, on the streets, anywhere people are shooting – you’ll notice a trend: equipment is becoming more streamlined and simpler. For those who grew up creating images for social media, the most important camera isn’t about having the best technology, it’s about having a camera readily available.

DSLR cameras require careful planning and take up a lot of space. They create a process between you and the actual event. For creators who need to work quickly and stay immersed in what they’re filming, this process is starting to feel more like a hindrance than a helpful step.

Giving up a traditional DSLR camera meant sacrificing its ability to zoom and capture distant subjects effectively. While phone cameras were improving, they historically struggled with things like portraits, wide shots, and isolating subjects from a distance—especially in crowded environments. This wasn’t a limitation of the technology itself, but rather the physical size constraints of fitting powerful lenses into a portable device.

That’s the problem no one wanted to admit smartphones hadn’t solved.

The Gap No One Could Close

In professional photography, a telephoto lens—specifically a 70–200mm—is more than just a way to zoom in. It fundamentally changes how a scene is captured. It compresses distances, isolates subjects from their surroundings, and creates images with a focused, intentional feel that’s hard to get with wider lenses. This lens doesn’t just take a picture; it conveys a specific perspective.

Putting high-quality lenses like that into a phone was a major challenge. A 200mm lens needs a long physical space to work, but smartphones are designed to be thin. It seemed impossible – unless engineers could find a completely new way to arrange the parts inside.

OPPO first brought periscope telephoto technology to the market, and with the Find X9 Ultra, they’re now proving its value and solidifying their leadership in this area.

The Architecture of a Folded Optical Path

The Find X9 Ultra boasts an impressive telephoto camera system, starting with a remarkable feature: a 50MP sensor paired with a genuine 10x optical zoom – all within a smartphone. This isn’t a digitally enhanced zoom; it’s a true optical zoom, built around a specially designed Samsung sensor and featuring a fast f/3.5 aperture that captures three times more light than the previous model.

To achieve the necessary zoom capabilities, OPPO developed a unique lens system using five reflections – essentially folding the light path over on itself five times. This allowed them to fit a powerful lens into a small, 29mm module. However, each reflection introduces a potential problem, as more surfaces can cause light to scatter and subtly reduce image clarity.

The key to solving the problem was redesigning the prism. We created three highly accurate components, each with a tiny, flexible membrane and an Air Capsule. This innovative approach eliminates unwanted light before it hits the sensor, cutting down on interference by more than 99.99%. The result is a remarkably clear image path within a surprisingly small device.

Achieving exceptional clarity requires perfect alignment, and we don’t settle for anything less. During assembly, we use three precise calibration steps with real-time, high-resolution imaging to position the lens, prism, and sensor with incredible accuracy – down to the micron level. Our sensor-shift stabilization then keeps the viewfinder remarkably steady, even at high magnification. Plus, every device undergoes over 100 quality checks before leaving the factory. Maintaining this level of consistency while producing at scale is a significant engineering achievement in itself.

The Shot You Didn’t Have to Plan For

When a phone’s telephoto lens truly delivers, it’s not just about better pictures. It changes how a photographer connects with the scene they’re capturing.

Stop worrying about whether your camera’s zoom is good enough to capture distant shots. Stop leaving your camera behind, thinking the quality won’t be there. With the Find X9 Ultra, you don’t have to compromise your vision. It’s designed to let your creativity flow freely, without being held back by your equipment – powerful performance in a more compact size.
