Future Game Of Thrones Spinoffs Get Cautious Update After Stark Sequel Rumors: “This Is Not Marvel”

After a lot of online buzz about potential new Game of Thrones shows, the head of HBO has shared their thoughts.

The world of Game of Thrones is expanding with two hit spinoffs: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which just launched this month. According to The Hollywood Reporter, two more shows are currently in the works – one continuing the story after Game of Thrones, and another exploring events that happened before it.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys, the head of HBO and HBO Max content, clarified that while there have been significant updates, no decisions are final. Bloys explained that strong initial interest in a project can sometimes be mistaken for active production. He stated, “People often assume that if something is in development, it’s already being made.”

The much-talked-about spin-off series – one following Arya Stark after the events of Game of Thrones with writer Quoc Dang Tran, and another a prequel about King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest – are not currently in development. Instead, creators are simply exploring potential ideas that might be picked up for production in the future.

Bloys clarifies that HBO has been very careful about which shows it actually makes, even though they develop many ideas. They want to explore lots of options to find truly great shows, but they haven’t produced a large number of them. Currently, they are developing the story of Aegon’s Conquest as both a television series and a large-scale movie event, similar in scope to Dune.

While HBO or Warner Bros. might eventually create a series based on Aegon I’s story, it won’t be like the rapid production schedule of Marvel shows. According to HBO executive Casey Bloys, people often mistake early development ideas for confirmed projects. He also pointed out that only two spin-off shows have actually been made since Game of Thrones ended seven years ago.

HBO has scrapped several potential projects related to Game of Thrones that weren’t developing as expected. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the planned sequel series focusing on Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was initially considered, but the idea shifted to center on Arya Stark instead. They even filmed a pilot for a prequel called Bloodmoon, featuring well-known actors, but ultimately decided not to move forward with the series.

Although more Game of Thrones shows could still happen, it might take a while because HBO is focused on making sure any new series are truly excellent. Right now, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is proving popular, and fans are eagerly awaiting season 3 of House of the Dragon. Both shows have generally received positive feedback from both critics and viewers.

George R.R. Martin’s world of A Song of Ice and Fire is incredibly detailed, and HBO is looking to build on that success with new shows. As an example, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was picked up for a second season even before the first episodes aired, and the network is reportedly exploring other potential spin-offs as well.

Game of Thrones and both spinoff TV shows are available to stream on HBO Max.
