Cliff Booth, the character Brad Pitt won an Oscar for playing seven years ago, is returning in a new film. Quentin Tarantino is passing the directing reins to David Fincher for The Adventures of Cliff Booth, which will have a special two-week showing in IMAX theaters starting November 25th, followed by its release on Netflix on December 23rd.
Hiring David Fincher as director is the most exciting part of this news, as it completely changes how we might imagine the sequel. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was relaxed and focused on feeling and ambiance, rather than plot. Fincher, however, is known for his precision and control – the opposite of Tarantino’s more free-flowing style. Combining Tarantino’s writing with Fincher’s direction is a unique pairing, and it’s hard to guess what the final result will be, especially considering how established both directors are.
What really grabs me is that this all takes place in 1977. The movie promises a Hollywood unlike the one we saw before, and I think it’s going to dive into that really messy time after the Manson murders and the Roman Polanski scandal. It was when things started to get darker and more cynical after the hopeful days of ‘New Hollywood,’ and I’m excited to see it all through the eyes of Cliff Booth – Brad Pitt’s character. He’s this super-chill stuntman with a mysterious past, and he seems like the perfect person to show us how Hollywood was changing. Plus, the supporting cast is incredible – Elizabeth Debicki, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and so many others. That tells me this movie isn’t just using the 70s as a backdrop; it’s really about that time.
With Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew delayed until 2027, Netflix has stepped in to fill a key slot during the Thanksgiving holiday movie season. The fact that a film like The Adventures of Cliff Booth is being considered alongside a major release like Narnia shows Netflix is now aiming for prime theatrical release dates, not just filling them. The Adventures of Cliff Booth will debut in IMAX theaters on November 25th, with an exclusive two-week run before becoming available on Netflix December 23rd.
