Sony announced a price increase for its subscriptions, which has upset many customers and could cause them to cancel their services. Many feel the price hike isn’t justified, and it risks damaging the company’s relationship with its loyal fanbase, especially as costs continue to climb.
Console prices are up across the board. Nintendo was the last company to raise its prices, recently announcing an increase. Even though the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S first came out in 2020, it’s now more expensive than ever to buy these current-generation consoles.
PlayStation Plus Essential Price Increase Is Alienating Fans
Starting May 20, 2026, the price of PlayStation Plus Essential will increase in North America and Europe. This change only impacts the Essential tier, which includes a few free games every month. The prices for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium will not be changing right now.
PlayStation Plus subscription prices are going up. A 1-month subscription will now cost $10.99 USD, €9.99 EUR, or £7.99 GBP, while a 3-month subscription will be $27.99 USD, €27.99 EUR, or £21.99 GBP. These new prices only affect new subscribers; current subscribers will keep their existing prices as long as their subscription remains active.
Sony explained the price increase by pointing to overall market challenges, but many fans are skeptical. While the cost of console production has risen due to a shortage of memory chips – impacting even older models – this doesn’t seem to be a factor for PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
Fans believe the price increase is being introduced quietly, hoping people won’t notice it amidst other rising costs. They feel it’s unnecessary and driven purely by profit, especially since existing subscribers are exempt from the change.
Sony’s Price Hikes Could Spell Disaster For The PS6
If console companies keep raising prices, they risk losing players. Those who only play multiplayer games occasionally might not find a subscription worthwhile, and some could switch to PC gaming, where playing online is generally free.
Even though Sony and Microsoft are raising the prices of their PlayStation and Xbox consoles, both systems are getting closer to the end of their current generation. Nintendo is already working on its next console, and Sony is anticipated to do the same soon.
Okay, so I’m hearing that Project Helix – and honestly, the PS6 – could be seriously affected by a memory shortage that’s predicted to hang around for ages. It’s got me worried because if Microsoft and Sony can’t even keep the costs reasonable for older components, how are they going to price the new, super-powerful stuff we’re all hoping for in the next generation of consoles? It feels like we might be looking at some really expensive hardware.
If Sony releases the PlayStation 6 before 2028, it’s likely to be too expensive for most people to afford.
With the rising cost of PlayStation Plus and increasingly expensive games becoming the norm, gaming is becoming too pricey for many people. If fewer people can afford to play, game sales will likely drop. While Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony aren’t at fault – they’re responding to market forces – continually raising prices risks alienating players who will seek more affordable entertainment options.
