The new Jack Ryan movie is coming to Prime Video, and its first Rotten Tomatoes score is now available. Sadly, it’s the lowest score the series has ever received.
As of today, Jack Ryan: Ghost War has a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from 11 critics. This score could change as more reviews come in, but it’s significantly lower than ratings for earlier films in the series. Ghost War premiered globally on Amazon’s Prime Video on May 20th, and also served as a producer and writer.
Jack Ryan is pulled back into the dangerous world of international intrigue, facing off against a secretive and unpredictable black-ops team. He teams up with his allies, Mike November and James Greer, to uncover a shadowy enemy who always seems one step ahead.
Ghost War’s Political Plot Dubbed ‘Generic’ By Critics
Critics who have seen the new film say it’s likely to disappoint those hoping for something exciting. Kevin Maher of The Times called it unoriginal and lacking personality, adding that it feels like something made specifically for streaming services.
Mark Keizer from MovieWeb rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars, suggesting that existing fans of the Jack Ryan series might enjoy it. He noted that while those heavily invested in Krasinski’s portrayal of the character will likely be entertained, the movie demonstrates that the franchise has largely run its course in its current form.
The poor reviews for Ghost War are a worrying sign for the Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six series, which has been receiving less positive feedback from critics over time. The 1990 film The Hunt for Red October is still considered the best in the franchise, with a high 88% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating.
The 2002 film The Sum of All Fears marked a fresh start for the series, with Ben Affleck stepping into the role of Ryan. However, the movie received a somewhat lukewarm reception. Even today, it holds a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences are equally divided, giving it a 49% approval rating based on over 50,000 votes.
Despite receiving generally negative initial reviews, the 2012 film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit performed better than early reactions to Ghost War. Shadow Recruit currently has a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 52% audience score based on over 50,000 reviews. While Ghost War‘s score could improve over time, it’s unlikely to surpass the performance of previous Jack Ryan films, particularly since it’s being released directly on streaming platforms.
Krasinski’s Jack Ryan TV Series Earned a Warmer Reception Than New Film
Although recent Jack Ryan movies haven’t always been well-received, John Krasinski’s TV series started strong when it premiered in 2018. Over four seasons, the show has consistently earned positive reviews, averaging 80% on the Tomatometer, with the final season receiving a particularly high score of 94%.
Following the previous installments, the recent downturn in interest for Ghost War is surprising, though public opinion could shift once the film is released. Director Andrew Bernstein remains optimistic, stating he believes there are still stories to tell with Jack Ryan, and opportunities to explore new facets of his personality. He hopes to continue the series.
Jack Ryan: Ghost War debuts on Prime Video on May 20, 2026.
