It seems like most TV shows and movies these days are adaptations – based on books, other movies, or video games. Sometimes they’re even inspired by fan-fiction, which can be especially awkward for the original artist. That’s why it’s so refreshing when something truly original comes along – a story that starts as a script and ends up on screen without relying on any pre-existing material.
The 10-part Apple TV series, created by David J. Rosen and directed by David Gordon Green, features Tatiana Maslany as Paula, a divorced mother who decides to solve a crime she sees. Maslany delivers another fantastic performance, and she’s well-supported by Jake Johnson, who adds a humorous but slightly annoying edge to his role. However, the acting is just one part of what makes Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed so funny and one of the best shows of the year so far.
Tatiana Maslany Leads a Dark Comedic Thriller
OnlyFans is a frequent topic on TV these days. Many streaming shows now include storylines centered around the platform, often focusing on its controversial aspects. One show, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, highlights the creative potential of OnlyFans, featuring imaginative, adult-themed roleplay. Another new show, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, aims to explore the risks and challenges within the sex work industry.
Although the show Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed doesn’t mention OnlyFans specifically, it revolves around similar content. After divorcing her husband, Karl, Paula starts communicating with an online performer named Trevor. When Trevor is attacked while they’re connected, and the police don’t investigate, Paula takes it upon herself to find out what happened.
This series doesn’t directly address the complex issues surrounding sex work, unlike some other shows. Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed only touches on the debate about whether sex work is a legitimate profession – and whether those involved are inherently immoral – when it impacts Paula’s fight for custody of her daughter, Hazel (Nola Wallace). This isn’t to say the show handles sensitive subjects poorly, but rather that it’s primarily a crime story about how Paula becomes deeply entangled in a dangerous situation.
Paula constantly finds herself in trouble, repeatedly ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time throughout the ten half-hour episodes. She keeps making the same mistakes, creating a frustrating cycle where she seems to sabotage herself. Despite this, she’s a sympathetic character – a dedicated mother who is unfairly targeted by her ex-husband and his new wife, Mallory (Jessy Hodges), who are trying to take her daughter. To make matters worse, her colleagues and the police believe she’s unstable and a threat. Paula is a compelling character, even though she often makes choices that worsen her situation.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’s Cast Bring Humor and Heart to the Story
A flawed main character could have been really engaging, and Paula often is. It’s ridiculous to suggest a mother shouldn’t live her own life, even if that includes online relationships. However, the story relies too much on Paula making unbelievably bad decisions just to move the plot forward. Doesn’t she deserve better? She certainly needs to be foolish when Karl and the awful Mallory are trying to take her daughter to Idaho and falsely accuse her of being a bad mother simply because she lives in an apartment – as if we didn’t already have plenty of reasons to dislike them.
Paula isn’t the only one investigating – she’s joined by her colleagues, Rudy and Geri, who quickly become like partners in solving the mystery. The actors Charlie Hall and Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg have great comedic timing together (Hall cleverly embodies traits from his famous parents, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall). There’s a playful spark between their characters that occasionally distracts from the main plot, but they become endearing as they play a bigger role in the story.
Paula occasionally works with Detective Sofia Gonzalez, who provides a welcome blend of dry wit and seriousness to the often grim storyline. While initially skeptical of Paula, Detective Gonzalez is a relatable character with a strong desire to uncover the truth – though she faces obstacles from a system that often prioritizes quick resolutions over thorough investigations. Paula also shares a fun dynamic with Detective Baxter, played by Jon Michael Hill.
This crime story is incredibly complex and full of unexpected twists that will keep you guessing. It’s a real pleasure to watch how all the seemingly separate threads connect, especially with Murray Bartlett delivering a chilling performance at the heart of it all. Just when you think you’ve figured things out, the plot throws you for a loop and heads in a completely new direction. The writing is so clever and sharp, it feels like you’re witnessing a group of brilliant criminals in action.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed Has a Secret Soft Side
Ultimately, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is also a story about family. Anyone who’s gone through a custody battle like Paula, Karl, or Hazel will likely find their experiences relatable. These cases are often unpleasant, with one parent strategically planning while the other reacts. The scenes featuring Maslany and Johnson are particularly strong, showcasing Maslany’s incredible expressiveness. Her facial expressions convey so much emotion, making her character’s feelings – whether it’s anger, confusion, or joy – feel very genuine and powerful.
The show’s crime story is incredibly compelling and feels realistic. However, it’s Tatiana Maslany’s performance – portraying both the pressures of motherhood and the longing for a fresh start – that truly gives the series its emotional depth. While some plot points can be confusing, the show effectively tugs at your heartstrings to deliver its message.
The show concludes by hinting at a second season, though it wasn’t strictly necessary. While Apple TV+ series often get renewed after a successful first season, this story would have benefitted from being a self-contained limited series. However, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed features compelling characters and delivered a fantastic first season. It’s a show you can enjoy for both its thrilling crime elements and its touching portrayal of family dynamics, offering a platform for women to share their experiences.
The Apple TV+ series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed launched with its first two episodes on May 20th, and new episodes were released every Wednesday until July 15th.
