Looks like Rovio Entertainment, the company behind Angry Birds, is jumping into the world of mobile football games! They’ve begun hiring staff for a new, free-to-play football game, suggesting they’re eager to capitalize on the excitement surrounding the World Cup.
Mobilegamer.biz noticed that Rovio is hiring a General Manager for its Barcelona office to lead a new, highly ambitious game. As a big soccer fan, this news has me really excited – it seems like Rovio is planning a major, long-term project.
A dedicated development team is being assembled at Rovio’s Barcelona studio
Rovio is looking for people with strong experience in football or other sports games, and who have worked on large, free-to-play games before. They are also creating a new development team based in Barcelona specifically for this project.
The company is looking for a leader to guide a game from its initial concept through to a successful, ongoing live service. This includes managing how the game makes money, planning its overall direction, running live events, and delivering regular content updates, all while overseeing the entire development process.
You might think Rovio is just now trying to make a soccer game, but that’s not quite right. They actually experimented with the genre almost ten years ago with Angry Birds Football, originally called Angry Birds Goal!, which came out in 2016.
New Star Games created the game, and Rovio published it to coincide with the UEFA Euro 2016 football tournament. Although the idea behind the game was good, it wasn’t successful and was ultimately cancelled in 2016.
It’s exciting to see a new football game in development after a decade, especially timed around the 2026 World Cup. Unlike previous attempts, this doesn’t feel like a simple tie-in to a popular franchise like Angry Birds. While it’s unlikely to be released this year, we might see it around the time of the Euro 2028 tournament – though it’s hard to say for sure.
2027 is shaping up to be a strong year for Rovio in terms of project plans
This news also shows what Rovio is aiming for with its games. Earlier this month, SEGA Sammy announced its latest financial results and mentioned that Rovio hasn’t performed as well financially as they’d hoped since the acquisition.
The company acknowledged their initial attempts at working together didn’t produce the financial results they expected, however, they are continuing to grow and expand their business.
The company has announced that new Angry Birds games are coming out before March 2027. They’re also expanding into more areas like movies, merchandise, and other entertainment options.
Although Angry Birds is still popular, Rovio is also looking to expand into more sustainable game genres. They’re clearly targeting the popular free-to-play football market and aiming to compete with major titles like eFootball, FC Mobile, and Dream League Soccer.
