Okay, so gaming is getting a little pricier. Sony just announced they’re raising the prices on PlayStation Plus subscriptions, starting May 20th. It mostly affects new players or those who canceled their subscriptions and are looking to come back. If you’re in the US and want a month of the Essential tier, it’s going up to $10.99. A three-month package will now cost $27.99. It’s pretty much the same story for Europe – €9.99 for a month and €27.99 for three. And for my UK friends, it’s £7.99 a month or £21.99 for a three-month plan. Just a heads up if you’re planning to resubscribe!

The company explained the price increase for its subscriptions is due to the current economic climate. This is a common explanation we’re hearing from many video game companies. The main reason for rising costs is that it’s becoming more expensive to manufacture technology, largely because of a shortage of memory chips. Increased demand for data centers used in artificial intelligence is driving up the prices of components like RAM and solid-state drives. This impacts everything from electronics to online services. Microsoft and Nintendo have recently raised prices on their consoles and subscriptions as well.

This price increase for digital content comes shortly after significant jumps in the cost of PlayStation consoles. Sony raised prices on all its consoles in April: the standard PlayStation 5 now costs $650, the more powerful PS5 Pro costs $900, and the handheld PlayStation Portal costs $250. This means it’s now much more expensive for new players to join the PlayStation community, both for the consoles themselves and for the online services they need to play multiplayer games.

Despite recent price increases, PlayStation Plus members won’t be affected right away. Current subscribers will keep their existing prices as long as their membership stays active and they don’t change plans. The only exception is for players in Turkey and India, where the new prices are happening immediately. The Extra and Premium tiers, which offer larger game libraries, haven’t changed in price – they remain $15 and $18 per month, respectively. Annual subscriptions will also keep their current prices for the time being, ensuring long-term members continue to get good value.
