The giant RX-0 Unicorn Gundam statue in Odaiba, Tokyo, will be taken down. Bandai announced that the full-size statue, a popular landmark since 2017, will be removed at the end of August 2026 after nearly nine years on display. If you want to see it, you have until the end of summer!
Okay, so you wanna know why that giant Gundam statue is such a big deal in Tokyo? You gotta understand Odaiba first. It’s this awesome artificial island in Tokyo Bay, packed with futuristic buildings, shops, and just a ton of cool pop culture stuff. Back in 2017, they put the Unicorn Gundam there – a massive, 19.7-meter-tall white robot from the Mobile Suit Gundam UC anime. It’s right outside the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, and it actually transforms between its Unicorn and Destroy modes with lights and sounds every hour! Seriously, for almost nine years it’s been one of those landmarks that everyone recognizes, even if they’ve never seen a Gundam show in their life. It just stops you in your tracks!
The life-size Unicorn Gundam wasn’t Bandai’s first giant robot in Tokyo. Back in 2009, a full-scale RX-78-2 Gundam stood in Odaiba for a short time before being moved and eventually taken apart. However, the Unicorn Gundam was different – it was much larger and meant to stay permanently. This made it more than just a temporary promotion; it became a landmark for locals and a major attraction for tourists. It turned Odaiba into a must-visit destination for anime and robot fans from around the globe, something very few franchises have achieved.
Bandai hasn’t explained why they’re taking the statue down, and their announcement doesn’t feel like a permanent farewell. They’ll be adding new decorations and holding events before it’s removed, implying they’re focusing on celebrating the statue’s time on display rather than just its end.
The Unicorn Gundam statue will no longer be on display at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba after August 2026.
