Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera Officially Returning to Star Wars in Upcoming Project

A fan-favorite hero who doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves is finally getting his moment in the spotlight with a special standalone story.

Marvel Comics is releasing a series of one-shot comics that revisit a dark period in Star Wars history, leading directly into the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The first comic is already out, and while fans have a little over a month to wait for the issue focusing on Saw Gerrera, there’s still time to prepare for its arrival.

The first issue of Star Wars: Rogue One — Saw Gerrera, written by Marc Bernardin and illustrated by Gabriel Guzman, will center around the daring freedom fighter Saw Gerrera and his most perilous mission yet. While fans know how his story ultimately ends, the adventure leading to that point promises to be compelling.

In the new Marvel comic, Star Wars: Rogue One — Saw Gerrera #1, readers will see what happened after Saw Gerrera fought in the Clone Wars. He’s now a dedicated fighter for freedom and will go to any lengths to achieve it, even venturing into dangerous Imperial territory. His mission? To find information that could give the Rebels a crucial advantage. But the comic asks: will obtaining this information come at too great a cost?

Who is Saw Gerrera in Star Wars?

The Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode “A War on Two Fronts” first introduced the character Saw Gerrera. Originally intended for a live-action Star Wars TV series that George Lucas never made, Saw Gerrera is portrayed as a dedicated fighter who bravely led the resistance to liberate his home planet, Onderon, from the Separatists.

Saw Gerrera has been featured in the Star Wars universe across multiple projects, including four TV series and the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). In Rogue One, Forest Whitaker took over the role originally voiced by Andrew Kishino, and Kishino also provided voice work for several other titles, such as the 2019 game Star Wars: The Fallen Order.

Marvel launched a series of one-shot comics exploring the backstories of characters from Rogue One on May 6th. The series continues with Star Wars: Rogue One — Jyn Erso #1 on June 3rd, followed by Star Wars: Rogue One — Saw Gerrera #1 on July 1st, Star Wars: Rogue One — Chirrut & Baze #1 in August, and Star Wars: Rogue One — Darth Vader #1 in September.

Star Wars: Rogue One — Saw Gerrera #1 from Marvel Comics goes on sale on July 1.
