Nicolas Cage clarifies why he didn’t play the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie.
Willem Dafoe eventually played Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin, returning to the role in Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. But according to Entertainment Weekly, Nicolas Cage and John Malkovich were also considered for the part.
Nicolas Cage recently revealed in an interview with People that he passed on the chance to play the Green Goblin. He confirmed he discussed the role with director Sam Raimi but ultimately chose to star in Spike Jonze’s Adaptation instead. Even after 24 years, Cage believes it was the correct decision. Adaptation also featured a stellar cast including Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, Tilda Swinton, and Brian Cox.
Nicolas Cage initially turned down the role of the Green Goblin but is now playing the lead in Spider-Noir. He says he enjoys portraying both heroes and villains, explaining, “I’ve played a lot of villains. I like both, because I think they’re both important for movies. I wouldn’t want to be limited to playing just one type of character.”
Although we’ll always wonder what Nicolas Cage would have brought to the role, Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Norman Osborn and the Green Goblin is considered one of the greatest villain performances in the Spider-Man films. He established a very high standard in the first Spider-Man movie directed by Sam Raimi, and unlike many of the other villains in No Way Home who seek redemption, Dafoe fully embraces his character’s evil side.
Even though Nicolas Cage hasn’t played Spider-Man on screen, he’s appeared in several other comic book movies. These include his roles as Ghost Rider in two films, as Big Daddy in Kick-Ass, and providing the voice for Superman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. He also voiced Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which later inspired the live-action character Spider-Noir.
The animated series Spider-Noir takes place in a 1930s New York City inspired by an alternate universe. Nicolas Cage voices Ben Reilly, a down-on-his-luck private investigator who must become the Spider to solve a significant new case. The show also features characters played by Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, Karen Rodriguez as Janet, Abraham Popoola as Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone, Jack Huston as Flint Marko/Sandman, and Brendan Gleeson as Silvermane. Viewers will have the option to watch the series in both black and white and color.
Beyond his roles in Marvel and DC films, Nicolas Cage enjoys playing a variety of characters, both good and bad. He’s known for his heroic performances in movies like National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, The Rock, and Con Air. On the villainous side, he’s played memorable characters such as Castor Troy in Face/Off, Longlegs, and Dracula in Renfield.
Nicolas Cage has several exciting projects lined up where he’ll tackle diverse roles. He’s set to play John Madden in a biopic called Madden, bring back his character Yuri Orlov from Lords of War, and once again voice Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
