PlayStation Plus Officially Gets Price Increase Starting May 20

The PlayStation has always been known for being expensive, and it’s about to become even pricier. Unfortunately, through no fault of their own, Sony is now facing the same problem as Nintendo and Microsoft, meaning customers will have to pay more.

PlayStation Plus has long offered free games and online access with a subscription. However, the price of that subscription is increasing soon.

Sony is Raising the Cost of PlayStation Plus on May 20

PlayStation Plus subscriptions cost $9.99 per month for the Essential plan, $14.99 for Extra, and $17.99 for Premium. If you prefer a three-month subscription, those plans cost $24.99, $39.99, and $49.99 respectively.

Starting May 20th, Sony is increasing the price for its Essential PlayStation Plus plan. The monthly cost will be $10.99 USD (or €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP), while a three-month subscription will cost $27.99 USD (or €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP).

We don’t yet know if the monthly or yearly cost of the Extra and Premium PlayStation Plus plans will go up. However, current PS Plus members won’t be affected by any price changes. The new, higher prices will only apply to people who sign up for PS Plus after this announcement. The only exception is for players in Turkey and India, who will not be able to continue with their current subscription prices.

PlayStation recently announced price increases, citing “ongoing market conditions.” This is mainly because the cost of essential hardware, particularly RAM, has significantly increased.

Even though Sony couldn’t have prevented this situation, many fans are still disappointed with the news. As expected, they’ve been sharing their frustration on X.

Honestly, seeing everyone say it’s just ‘the market’ is wild. I mean, by 2026, online games should just be free to play, no hidden stuff you have to pay extra for. It feels like a basic expectation at this point.

One user expressed frustration, saying, “First you raised the price of the PS5, and now you’re increasing the cost of online subscriptions? What’s going on?”

While some players have expressed frustration with recent price increases, others are defending Sony. One user pointed out that maintaining servers isn’t free and questioned why anyone would choose short-term subscription options instead of longer ones.

Okay, so if you’re a PlayStation 5 owner thinking about getting PS Plus, you really need to sign up before May 20th! They’re raising the prices permanently after that, so it’s a good time to jump in if you’ve been considering it.
