While resilience is a key trait of heroes, some face challenges that go far beyond the typical. These characters might be stuck repeating cycles of death, forced to witness the pain of those they care about, or gradually lose what makes them human. They experience intense physical and emotional suffering that would overwhelm almost anyone.
Many of the most impactful anime series don’t shy away from difficult themes. They use hardship to delve into complex emotions like grief and trauma, and to show the lasting effects of simply trying to survive. These stories often feature heartbreaking events and intense psychological challenges that fundamentally change the characters, leaving them forever marked by their experiences. Even when characters grow stronger, the pain they endure leaves a permanent impact.
Re:Zero’s Hero Suffers a Thousand Deaths
Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World starts with Subaru Natsuki unexpectedly finding himself in a magical new world. He initially believes he’s meant to be a hero, but quickly realizes his unique ability is actually a frightening curse: whenever he dies, he’s sent back in time, forced to repeat the same experiences again and again.
Subaru’s situation is uniquely painful because he’s forced to relive every death, while others forget and move on. He experiences countless, often gruesome, deaths and witnesses the loss of friends over and over, which takes a heavy toll on his mental state. Unlike typical heroes, Subaru can’t simply fight his way out of trouble; he must suffer through repeated, deadly consequences to overcome obstacles.
Guts is the Poster Boy for Anime Suffering
Guts, the main character of Berserk, would win any competition measuring hardship. His life has been marked by tragedy from the very beginning – he was born on a battlefield, next to his mother’s body, and has consistently faced loss and betrayal. Even when he finds camaraderie and a sense of belonging with the Band of the Hawk, joy is always fleeting.
Even before the tragic event known as The Eclipse, Guts was deeply traumatized by a childhood filled with war and sexual violence. Griffith’s devastating betrayal completely broke him, and he was forced to witness the deaths of almost everyone he cared about in a notoriously brutal scene. For years afterward, Guts was relentlessly pursued by demons each night while battling intense emotional scars. More than most anime protagonists, Guts from Berserk endures through pure willpower and determination.
Ken Kaneki Watches His Humanity Slowly Erode
Ken Kaneki starts Tokyo Ghoul as a quiet college student with a crush, but his life changes forever when he’s attacked by a ghoul. This attack turns him into a half-human, half-ghoul creature, forcing him to live a secret life where he must consume human flesh to survive. Being neither fully human nor fully ghoul, Kaneki finds himself alone and rejected by both worlds.
When Kaneki realizes he can no longer enjoy his favorite foods, it’s just the beginning of his troubles. Throughout the story, he endures brutal torture and witnesses the deaths of people he cares about. This ongoing trauma deeply impacts who he is, causing him to struggle with his identity. He desperately tries to hold onto his gentle nature, but the harsh realities around him constantly threaten to turn him into someone violent and emotionally detached.
Devilman Crybaby Pits Its Hero Against Hopeless Odds
In Devilman Crybaby, Akira Fudo briefly finds peace before being forced to merge with a demon to safeguard humanity. This grants him immense power, but like Ken Kaneki, he’s caught between the human and demon realms. Unlike typical action heroes who become stronger through challenges, Akira’s experiences with both human and demonic cruelty only deepen his emotional pain.
As Devilman Crybaby progresses, it transforms into a deeply disturbing and emotional experience. Akira witnesses the breakdown of society, with fear causing people to attack one another. He endures the horrific deaths of his friends, the tragic murder of his beloved, and is left to face overwhelming challenges that threaten the entire world. Even his final defeat by Satan feels like a release from the immense pain he’s suffered.
Parasyte: The Maxim Infects its Hero with a Hideous Affliction
Shinichi Izumi finds the most terrifying part of Parasyte: The Maxim to be his own loss of humanity. When an alien parasite invades his body, lodging itself in his arm, he’s thrown into a strange partnership with it. Meanwhile, other deadly parasites are secretly attacking people all around him. His ordinary life as a student vanishes, and he’s left with a level of fear and distrust similar to what you’d find in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Shinichi’s physical transformation into a monstrous being is terrifying, but the changes happening inside his mind are far more damaging. The parasite that gives him strength also cuts him off from his emotions. He finds he can’t even cry, even when something truly awful happens, like his mother’s death, and his life becomes a bleak and emotionally empty struggle.
David Martinez is Built and Broken by a Brutal System
Life in Night City is hard for almost everyone. The anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners begins with David Martinez, a bright but disadvantaged student just trying to get by. When his mother dies, his life falls apart, and he’s drawn into the dangerous world of mercenaries and crime, hoping to find a way to escape the city’s grip and build a better future.
As David becomes more immersed in Night City’s world of cybernetic modifications, the story transforms into a heartbreaking tale of self-destruction. Each upgrade brings him closer to losing his mind, strains his relationships, and results in the loss of those he loves. Ultimately, David’s tragically short life comes to an end.
Madoka Kamane is Forced to Abandon Her Humanity
I’m completely fascinated by Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and one thing that really strikes me is how Madoka Kaname seems to just watch as everyone around her struggles. At first, you might think she’s lucky, avoiding the worst of it, but honestly, I think she’s hurting just as much, if not more. Seeing her friends fall into despair is heartbreaking, and it’s so frustrating because nobody – not even her family – can grasp what she’s going through now that she’s been exposed to the world of magical girls. It’s a really powerful, and tragic, portrayal.
Madoka’s tragedy stems from her feeling of powerlessness. To end a never-ending cycle of pain, she must make a heartbreaking sacrifice: giving up everything she knows and loves – her friends, family, and any chance at a normal life. By doing so, she saves other magical girls from falling into despair, solidifying her place as one of anime’s most deeply tragic characters.
Attack on Titan Transforms Its Hero into a Monster
I still remember being absolutely floored by Eren’s backstory in Attack on Titan. Before he became such a complex, and honestly controversial, character, the series really put him through the wringer. Seeing his mother devoured by a Titan during the fall of Wall Maria was brutal, and it completely changed everything for him. Honestly, from that point on, it felt like his life was just one heartbreaking event after another – constant violence, people betraying him, and the shattering of everything he believed in. It’s a really impactful origin story.
What really gets me about Eren is how completely his pain changes him. So many anime heroes go through hardship and still hold onto who they are, but Eren? By the end, he’s not that determined kid fighting Titans anymore. He’s become this really broken person who genuinely believes becoming a monster himself is the only way to actually survive – it’s a total transformation, and honestly, it’s heartbreaking.
Riko Suffers More than Most Adult Heroes
Although losing her mother was difficult, Riko’s experiences in Made in Abyss become far more terrifying as she explores the Abyss. She faces brutal violence and almost loses her arm after being poisoned by a dangerous creature. As the story progresses, the threats she encounters aren’t just monsters – her problems become much deeper and more complex.
Riko is deeply traumatized after meeting Bondrewd, a truly disturbing villain in anime. His cruel experiments on children show the terrible price of surviving the dangers of the Abyss, and Riko now understands the path forward is built on tragedy. She’s utterly exhausted, hungry, and haunted by what she’s seen, all while feeling lost without her mother’s guidance.
Shinji was Dealt One of the Worst Hands in Anime
From the very start, Shinji Ikari faces overwhelming pressure. Having been largely abandoned by his father, he’s unexpectedly called to Tokyo-3 and tasked with piloting a massive, robotic weapon to battle alien creatures. He’s a vulnerable and insecure teenager who craves love and acceptance, yet the adults around him constantly put him in dangerous, life-threatening scenarios with very little emotional support.
Each fight against the Angels deeply damages Shinji’s mental state. After each battle, he becomes increasingly anxious, emotionally unstable, and filled with self-loathing. By the end of the series and in the movie The End of Evangelion, Shinji is a broken version of his former self, consumed by loneliness and guilt as the world falls apart. Evangelion consistently places an impossible burden on a child, a weight that even the strongest adult couldn’t bear.
