Zach Galifianakis’ Prequel to Mel Brooks’ 52-Year-Old Cult Horror Classic Gets Official Order

I was so excited to hear that they’re making a prequel to Mel Brooks‘ hilarious horror film from 1974! It’s a true cult classic, and it’s amazing to think it’s still capturing imaginations over five decades later.

FX has greenlit Very Young Frankenstein as a new series. The network initially ordered a pilot in October 2025, and now the show is officially moving forward. It’s created by the same team behind the popular show What We Do in the Shadows.

Very Young Frankenstein Is Described as an ‘Original’ Take

Mel Brooks is planning a sequel to Spaceballs next year, and his classic Young Frankenstein is also getting a revival. The project will be executive produced by Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi, and Garrett Basch – the team behind What We Do In the Shadows – alongside Brooks himself.

I’m really excited about this new series – the cast is fantastic! It’s got Zach Galifianakis, who’s always hilarious, plus Dolly Wells, Spencer House, Nikki Crawford, Kumail Nanjiani, and even Cary Elwes! Such a great lineup of talent.

FX’s upcoming series, Very Young Frankenstein, will be a fresh and funny reimagining of the beloved movie, staying true to the playful and unique style of FX’s other comedies, according to Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment.

I’m so excited about this series! Knowing it’s being made with the incredible talents of Stefani, Taika, Garrett, and the legendary Mel Brooks, I just know fans are going to have as much fun watching it as we’re all having making it. It’s going to be amazing!

FX has already greenlit three other shows for full seasons: a spin-off of Snowfall featuring Gail Bean and Isaiah John, a family drama called Seven Sisters with Elizabeth Olsen, Cristin Milioti, and J. Smith-Cameron, and Disinherited, created by a co-creator of Better Call Saul (Peter Gould) and starring Victoria Pedretti and Kiera Allen.

Young Frankenstein Is a Classic

Young Frankenstein, released in 1974, is a humorous take on Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel, Frankenstein. Mel Brooks wrote the screenplay with Gene Wilder, who also starred as the main character. The film features a talented cast including Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Richard Haydn, and Gene Hackman, with Peter Boyle playing the Monster.

Young Frankenstein playfully spoofs classic horror movies. The film is intentionally shot in black and white to capture the feel of 1930s horror films, like the original 1931 Frankenstein.

Critics loved the movie, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating and calling it a hilarious parody, while also praising Gene Wilder’s performance. Audiences overwhelmingly agreed, with a 92% approval rating. It was also a huge financial hit, earning $86.2 million despite only costing $2.7 million to make.

Very Young Frankenstein doesn’t have a release date yet.
