In Pol Taburet’s New Show, Paranoia Is the Point

Summary

  • French artist Pol Taburet presents Paranoia as Method, his new solo exhibition at Villa Medici in Rome
  • On through July 15, the exhibition wraps the villa in sculptures, paintings and charcoal drawings, all completed during his spring residency at the institution

Despite their strange and dreamlike quality, Pol Taburet says his figures aren’t based on dreams at all. These works, which blend human and animal forms, explore themes of change, death, and the ambiguous boundary between life and death. As each piece nears completion, it builds a sense of intense spiritual energy.

Following a recent residency at Villa Medici in Rome, French artist Pier Paolo Pancotto is presenting a new exhibition called Paranoia as Method. On display until July 15th, the show features sculptures, large paintings, and charcoal drawings, transforming the villa’s beautiful 16th-century gardens and rooms into unsettling, dreamlike spaces. You might recognize his charcoal work from the video he created for musician Oneohtrix Point Never.

Taburet’s art is uniquely his own, drawing inspiration from his Caribbean heritage, voodoo, modern life, and classic paintings. His latest exhibition explores the feeling of paranoia, using fragmented and blended figures to create a sense of unease and leaving viewers with a feeling of anxiety as their only guide.

In the exhibition notes, Matthieu Peck described a cycle where worry becomes a habit and distrust a creative process, repeating endlessly with each new day.

Taburet’s Paranoia as Method is now on view in Rome.
