The early access release of Subnautica 2 on Xbox Series X/S and PC has been marked by some controversy. While many players initially supported the developers after a lawsuit involving their wrongful dismissal by co-publisher Krafton, the community is now expressing frustration with a particular aspect of the game’s gameplay.
As a big fan of Subnautica and Below Zero, I was really excited for Subnautica 2. It feels very similar to the games I already love, but there’s one big difference that’s causing a lot of frustration. You can’t fight back against the creatures! There are no weapons at all, and the developers have said they’re sticking with that design. A lot of us in early access are getting pretty annoyed because it makes survival so much harder when you’re completely defenseless.
Ever since its release on Game Pass, Xbox Preview, and Steam Early Access, players have been talking a lot about the fact that Subnautica 2 doesn’t include weapons. While the developers at Unknown Worlds don’t want players to endlessly hunt the game’s creatures, the player frustration is more complicated than that. One Reddit user, Revverb, put it simply: “I understand not wanting to kill things, but the inability to do so is becoming really frustrating.”
The main problem with the new pacifist approach in Subnautica 2 isn’t that players can’t harm creatures, but that they have no way to defend themselves. As Revverb explains, while the developers understandably don’t want players simply killing large creatures, the knife served a purpose beyond that – it could be used to temporarily scare away predators, like hitting a shark on the nose to make it swim away. Without this option, players are forced to run from every dangerous creature until they progress much further into the game’s early access version, leaving them with no effective means of protection.
Many players seem happy with the decision to remove knives from Subnautica 2. One Reddit user, Consistent-Fudge4849, believes the game “definitely should” focus on escaping threats instead of fighting them. However, they and others find that some creatures are overly aggressive, which is frustrating rather than frightening. This highlights a core problem: players currently have limited options beyond abandoning their tasks and fleeing from predators.
The team at Unknown Worlds knows some players are finding the creatures in Subnautica 2 too aggressive. In a recent interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Design Lead Anthony Gallegos admitted this is likely to remain a challenge as the game develops. He emphasized that Subnautica games intentionally avoid giving players guns, because they want players to feel like they’re adapting to a new environment, not trying to control or conquer it.
Gallegos explained that Subnautica 2 already includes options for dealing with threats, though some become available later in the game. The developers are actively working on these systems and plan to incorporate player feedback. They want to address concerns from players who feel vulnerable, offering ways to defend themselves while still encouraging players to prioritize avoidance as a strategy.
So far, Subnautica 2 is great, but some dedicated fans are unhappy with a small gameplay change. They’re finding it much harder to build bases or explore because they’re constantly attacked by creatures, and they miss the simple knife from the first game that offered a quick way to defend themselves.
Based on the frequent feedback from players, it looks like Unknown Worlds will likely address the current issues soon. They might also adjust how hostile the sea creatures are. While these problems can be annoying, that’s often the point of early access – it allows games like Subnautica 2 to improve and become even better.
