Similar to how Jon Snow seemingly survived at the end of Game of Thrones season 5, his planned spinoff series hasn’t been cancelled yet.

As a huge fan of fantasy, I was thrilled when HBO decided to expand the world of Game of Thrones after the original series finished in 2019. We’ve already gotten House of the Dragon, which is fantastic, and there’s another series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, coming out in 2026. For a while, it seemed like we’d also be getting a show focused on Jon Snow, but Kit Harington recently shared that those plans have been put on hold, which is a bit of a disappointment.

Kit Harington recently shared some hopeful news at Motor City Comic Con. According to ScreenRant, who were present at the event, the planned Jon Snow spinoff series isn’t canceled, but put on hold. The project stalled because the writers haven’t yet found a story they’re happy with, though Harington remains optimistic that the character could reappear in the future if the right opportunity arises. Everyone knows we explored the idea of a Jon Snow spin-off for a while, but it just didn’t work out. I didn’t want to risk ruining the character. I feel like his story had a satisfying conclusion and he ended up where he was supposed to be, so revisiting it would only make sense if we had a really compelling reason.

I still felt there was more to the story that needed to be told. I thought it would be really interesting to focus an entire story, or a large part of one, around his character. In Game of Thrones, you’re usually seeing things from many different perspectives, so a more focused look at just one character felt like a good opportunity. That’s what drew me to the idea.

We haven’t found the perfect opportunity yet, so we’ve paused the project for now. But it’s incredible to think he could return someday – he’s not gone for good. I also feel much more experienced now than when I first worked on Game of Thrones – perhaps not necessarily wiser, but definitely more seasoned. A part of me might want to revisit that character in the future, though nothing is currently in development.

Kit Harington revealed in an October 2024 interview with ScreenRant that the planned Jon Snow spinoff series has been canceled. He explained that HBO is no longer working on the project, stating they “couldn’t find the right story.” While the project is currently shelved, Harington expressed hope that it might be revisited at some point in the future.

I hadn’t discussed it much because it was still just an idea we were exploring. I wanted to keep it under wraps to avoid premature speculation – both positive and negative – in case it didn’t actually come to fruition. When something is in development, we carefully consider all possibilities to determine if it’s worth pursuing.

Honestly, a new installment isn’t happening right now. We just couldn’t crack a story that really excited all of us, so we’ve decided to put it aside for the time being. Maybe someday we’ll revisit it, but for now, it’s definitely shelved. It just wasn’t working, and we didn’t want to force something that didn’t feel right.

Despite previously being cancelled, there’s still a chance for a Jon Snow spin-off series. In November 2024, HBO’s Casey Bloys hinted at revisiting the project, saying they might “try again,” but offered no specifics about how or when that might happen.

HBO hasn’t completely abandoned the planned Jon Snow spinoff, and they’re still exploring options for its future. The story would reportedly continue Jon Snow’s journey after he travels north of the Wall at the end of Game of Thrones, but details are scarce.

One of the most significant details from George R.R. Martin’s January 2026 interview with The Hollywood Reporter was that Kit Harington had ideas for Jon Snow’s future. He envisioned Jon living a solitary life, grappling with post-traumatic stress. Harington, along with two writers from his HBO show Gunpowder, proposed that Jon would reject his past by abandoning his direwolf, Ghost, and giving up his sword, Longclaw.

The potential Jon Snow spinoff is currently stalled, not cancelled but also not actively moving forward. HBO is open to the idea, but so far, no one has come up with a compelling story to bring the character back. It’s stuck in a strange position – it could happen, but only if a really great idea emerges.
