The BBC crime thriller The Cage concluded on Monday, May 18th with a heartbreaking but fitting ending to Leanne and Matty’s turbulent journey, though some mysteries remain. After weeks of deception, stealing, and increasing stress, the series forced its main characters to face the results of their choices. One character received a prison sentence, while the other was tentatively released, hinting that their story might not be finished.
Premiering in late April 2026, The Cage tells the story of Leanne and Matty, casino employees played by Sheridan Smith and Michael Socha, who turn to crime when money gets tight. The series is set in the tough casino world of Liverpool and starts with a seemingly simple plan: rob the casino safe and get away with it. However, things quickly go wrong.
Throughout the show, Leanne faces mounting financial pressures as she tries to support her family and care for her grandmother, who is increasingly affected by dementia. At the same time, Matty is battling a gambling addiction that’s led to serious debt and threats from dangerous lenders.

As the stakes get higher, the two characters start taking bigger risks, especially when casino owner Gary, played by Barry Sloane, begins to suspect they’re up to something. Everything ultimately falls apart in a dramatic and explosive finale.
When things began to fall apart, Leanne and Matty tried to escape, but the police caught up with them in a dramatic raid. Matty took the blame for everything to protect Leanne, saving her from facing any consequences. The episode ends with Matty in jail, awaiting his trial, and Leanne left to pick up the pieces of her life.
What to Read Next
Even though Leanne and Matty are no longer together, the show suggests they still have strong feelings for each other. The final scene, where Leanne visits Matty in prison, implies their relationship might not be over. The ending also intentionally leaves Gary’s fate uncertain.
Despite being arrested in the police raid, they couldn’t find any proof linking him to the casino’s criminal operations. At the end of the story, Gary is released, left alone, but still a potential threat.
The show’s ending hints at a possible second season, where Gary might try to take back control, and Leanne and Matty could face the fallout from what they’ve done. However, the BBC hasn’t confirmed whether The Cage will be renewed, though writer Tony Schumacher seems to have intentionally left the story open for continuation.

The character of Matty feels incredibly real, and that’s because the show’s creator, Tony, based it on his own brother’s battle with alcoholism. Sadly, Tony’s brother passed away during the making of the series in 2025.
You know, my brother struggled with alcohol, and a lot of the character Matty is based on him. It was really tough watching him go through liver and kidney failure – he was in the hospital for twelve weeks, just slowly getting worse. Actually, when I was writing Michael’s storyline, I was also dealing with a lot of the same emotions and challenges I was experiencing with my brother at the time. It was a way to process things, I guess.
Tony revealed that Sheridan Smith was always his ideal choice to play Leanne. He explained, “From the very beginning, I pictured her in the role.” He praised Smith as “the nation’s sweetheart,” highlighting her ability to portray vulnerability, humor, and intelligence, and noting her deep understanding of the script’s emotional core.

Even if the story were to continue, a second season isn’t likely to happen right away. Sheridan is already busy with her next project, an ITV thriller called Two Birds, which is currently being filmed in Australia. She told The Express in April that this role is proving to be one of her most challenging yet.
I don’t have much luck with games of chance, but the job I’m starting next month is completely different from anything I’ve done before. It requires me to learn how to use guns, practice combat skills, and ride a motorcycle – I’ve already fallen off that twice!
Despite its conclusion, The Cage doesn’t feel completely resolved. With loose ends involving Leanne and Matty’s relationship, Gary’s continued danger, and the ongoing consequences of their actions, the BBC thriller has set up plenty of possibilities for a compelling next season.
