Under Salt Marsh cast: Who is who in Sky’s gripping new drama, and where you’ve seen them before

The new Sky drama, Under Salt Marsh, is now available and is expected to be a thrilling series. It centers around a large storm approaching a Welsh town, coinciding with the discovery of a child’s body by his teacher, Jackie Ellis.

Now, retired detective Jackie is forced to team up with her ex-partner when the recent death reopens an old case – the one that previously ended her career – and deeply impacts their town.

Kelly Reilly and Rafe Spall star in the series, and the show features a talented supporting cast. Here’s a guide to the actors you’ll see.

What to Read Next

Kelly Reilly as Jackie Ellis

Jackie Ellis used to be a detective, but now she’s a teacher. The discovery of a child’s body stirs up difficult memories because her own niece disappeared several years ago – an event that ended her career as a police officer. She suspects the two cases might be connected.

Kelly Reilly is famous for her role as Beth Dutton in the popular series Yellowstone, where she stars with Kevin Costner. Before Yellowstone, she appeared in shows like True Detective and Britannia. She’s also been in films including the 2005 version of Pride & Prejudice and the 2009 movie Sherlock Holmes.

Rafe Spall as Detective Eric Bull

Detective Eric Bull is Jackie’s old colleague from the police force and is now investigating this case. However, their relationship is complicated – he was also involved in the search for Jackie’s niece who disappeared previously.

Rafe Spall is a familiar actor on British television, having appeared in series like Trying on Apple TV, and The English, The Salisbury Poisonings, and The War of the Worlds on the BBC. He’s also been in several Hollywood films, including Just Mercy, Men in Black: International, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and The Big Short.

Jonathan Pryce as Solomon Bevan

Detective Solomon Bevan is the head of the Bevan family and the grandfather of Cefin, the boy who was discovered deceased.

Jonathan Pryce has had a long and successful acting career. He’s known for a variety of roles, including playing a villain in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, and for his Oscar-nominated performance as Pope Francis in The Two Popes. More recently, he portrayed Prince Philip in the final seasons of The Crown, and currently stars in the series Slow Horses.

Naomi Yang as Jess Deng

Okay, so there’s this other detective, Jess Deng, working with Eric on the case. Honestly, she’s not sure Jackie should be part of the investigation, and it’s causing some serious friction between them. It’s adding a whole new layer of drama, like a side quest I didn’t ask for!

I’m a big fan of Naomi Yang! You might know her from a few popular British shows recently, like Nightsleeper and DI Ray, which I really enjoyed. But I first noticed her playing Li in season 6 of Peaky Blinders – she was fantastic in that role!

Harry Lawtey as Dylan Rees

Dylan Rees is connected to the case in two ways. First, his nephew was close friends with the boy involved. Second, he is currently in a relationship with Jackie.

Harry Lawtey first gained recognition for his role as Robert Spearing in the BBC series Industry. Since then, he’s appeared in major films, playing Harvey Dent in Joker: Folie à Deux and Richard Burton in Mr Burton. Under Salt Marsh is his first television project since finishing Industry two years ago.

Dinita Gohil as Nisha Jones

Nisha Jones is Jackie’s sister-in-law and a teacher. She helped Jackie find a job at the school after Jackie left their previous profession.

Dinita Gohil is known for her role as Fate Maiden in Netflix’s The Sandman. She’s also appeared in DI Ray and Silent Witness. Additionally, she played a significant role as Amanda in the 2019 film Greed, a black comedy starring Steve Coogan.

Brian Gleeson as Mac Jones

Mac Jones is Nisha’s husband and is passionate about his work leading a major construction project for the town.

Brian Gleeson is part of a famous Irish acting family, alongside his father Brendan and brother Domhnall, but he’s also become a well-known actor on his own. He’s appeared in popular TV shows like Peaky Blinders and Bad Sisters, and has been in Hollywood films such as Assassin’s Creed, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Logan Lucky. Interestingly, he made a brief appearance in The Mandalorian as Brendol Hux, the father of the character his brother plays in the newer Star Wars movies.

Dino Fetscher as Gareth Evans

Gareth Evans is an environmental agency assessor who arrives in town. However, he has a past connection with Bull, and it’s possible this history will be revealed during his investigation.

Dino Fetscher first gained recognition a decade ago in Russell T Davies’s series Cucumber and Banana. Since then, he’s appeared in Davies’s Years and Years and Sally Wainwright’s Gentleman Jack. He’s also had roles in popular shows like The Split, Fool Me Once, and Foundation.

Kimberley Nixon as Shell Hill

Shell Hill is Cefin’s mother and a member of the Bevan family. She lives in town with her husband, Danny.

Okay, so you might know Kimberley Nixon from the hilarious show Fresh Meat – she played Josie Jones, and she was brilliant! But she’s not just funny; she’s a really versatile actress. I’ve also seen her in some pretty intense stuff like the Disney+ series Shardlake, and dramas like Consent and The Salisbury Poisonings. Actually, she even worked with Tim Spall on The Salisbury Poisonings – he was also in Under Salt Marsh with her, which is a cool connection!

Mark Stanley as Danny Hill

Who is Danny Hill? Cefin’s father and Shell’s husband who also runs the local butcher shop.

Mark Stanley first appeared on screen in the popular series Game of Thrones, playing the character Grenn, a ranger who was a friend to Jon Snow. Since then, he’s built a successful acting career, appearing in critically acclaimed dramas like Adolescence and A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story. He’s also been in major shows including Happy Valley, Trigger Point, and The Reckoning.

The first two episodes of Under Salt Marsh will be available to watch tonight on Sky and NOW.
