Barbra Streisand has provided an update on her health after cancelling her appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. She was scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award, the Palme d’Or, at the event’s closing ceremony.
The highly-regarded festival is currently being held, and actor Lea Michele, known for her roles in Funny Girl and A Star is Born, is among those receiving a special award this year, alongside Peter Jackson and John Travolta.
Barbra Streisand is recovering from a knee injury and won’t be able to attend the award ceremony in person. The event is this Saturday, May 23rd, and will still feature a planned celebration of her career.
Barbra Streisand has announced she won’t be able to attend the Cannes Film Festival this year while she continues to recover from a knee injury, according to a statement reported by Variety. She is, however, very honored to be receiving the honorary Palme d’Or award.
I was really excited to celebrate the wonderful films at the 79th festival, and I was also eager to reconnect with colleagues I greatly respect. Plus, I always enjoy going back to France.

The award-winning actor and singer, a two-time Academy Award winner and ten-time Grammy winner, ended his speech by saying, “I’m deeply grateful to the Festival and to everyone who continues to support and celebrate the world of film.”
Following Barbra Streisand’s decision to withdraw, the festival issued a statement expressing their well wishes for her speedy recovery. Iris Knobloch, Thierry Frémaux, and the whole festival team sent her their warmest regards.
The 79th Cannes Film Festival kicked off on May 12th with the premiere of the French film The Electric Kiss, a comedy-drama set in a historical period. The festival’s highest honor, the Palme d’Or for Best Film, will be revealed at the closing ceremony.
Twenty-two films are competing for awards, including the eagerly awaited Fjord featuring Sebastian Stan. Gillian Anderson’s horror film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, will be shown in the Un Certain Regard section.
The 79th Cannes Film Festival runs from 12-23 May.
