Why Kelsey Grammer Didn’t Want Jane Leeves in Frasier (& Who Almost Played Daphne Instead)

As a huge fan, I’ve always felt Frasier was so much more than just a continuation of Cheers. It really celebrated smart writing and genuinely funny moments. Sure, everyone remembers Frasier Crane himself – he could be a bit of a snob! – but what truly made the show work was the amazing supporting cast. They kept things relatable, bringing a touch of the everyday, middle-class humor that Cheers fans already loved, and kept Frasier from floating off into the stratosphere.

Daphne Moon is a perfect example of a supporting character who truly shines. Starting as a simple physical therapist, she quickly became a beloved fixture on the show and eventually found romance with Frasier’s brother, Niles. Many viewers feel the show wouldn’t have been as successful without her, arguing she provided heart and development beyond the show’s often-pretentious humor. Interestingly, Kelsey Grammer reportedly wasn’t initially enthusiastic about casting Jane Leeves in the role.

Daphne Was Originally a Latina Housekeeper

Daphne Moon brings a unique perspective to Frasier, largely because she’s not part of Frasier’s world. Originally from Manchester, England, she moved to the US shortly before becoming the Cranes’ housekeeper. Frasier hired her to care for his father, who was in constant pain after being shot.

Daphne adds a playful, comedic element to the show, and also becomes a major romantic interest for Niles Crane. Despite both having past relationships and Niles being unhappily married, they eventually fall in love. As the series progresses, Daphne becomes an integral part of the group, often challenging Frasier’s snobbery and keeping Martin engaged.

Daphne isn’t just a supporting character—she’s essential to the show’s success, keeping everything connected and working well.

Daphne’s personality is heavily influenced by her family, though they’re mostly talked about through memories of her upbringing until later in the series. Her numerous brothers and demanding mother all play a role in shaping who she is. While they can be a handful, they also bring much-needed humor and lightness to the often-serious Crane household.

Many fans actually enjoy the complicated family history of the character Daphne, finding it both funny and featuring recognizable actors like Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid. However, the team casting the role of the housekeeper struggled to decide if they wanted a British, Spanish, or South American actress.

Rosie Perez was considered for the role before Jane Leeves ultimately landed it. The character of Daphne was originally intended to be a live-in nurse for Frasier, who was supposed to be paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. However, producers felt this storyline would negatively affect Frasier’s character and make the show unbelievable.

I was so relieved to hear they hadn’t completely given up on finding the perfect Daphne Moon! It wasn’t a total loss, thankfully. The actress who almost played her, Perez, actually did get to be on the show later. She appeared in a Season 11 episode, playing Roz’s really annoying friend, Lisabeth – and Roz thought she’d be a great match for Frasier, can you believe it?

She also made a brief appearance as a voice on the phone in Season 2, Episode 12, “Roz in the Doghouse.” It seems the show’s creators were still figuring out the character of Daphne Moon, and they initially believed popular actress Elyssa Perez would be a good fit. However, she didn’t quite end up being the right choice for the role.

The Search for Daphne Went Through a Few Different Possibilities

After the team developed a strong sense of Daphne’s character, they were determined to cast a British actress in the role. Despite Kelsey Grammer’s concerns that it might fall into clichés, the search began for the right performer. Lisa Maxwell was among those who auditioned, but ultimately didn’t get the part.

Maxwell was already well-known for her role as Samatha Nixon on the long-running police drama, The Bill. The show was incredibly popular for almost 30 years, and Maxwell joined during its most successful period in the early 2000s. The producers were looking for a genuine British actress with television experience, and Maxwell was a perfect fit.

Maxwell was working with an agency that specialized in launching British actors in Hollywood. When she auditioned for the part in 1993, she honestly told the producers she didn’t think the first line was very funny. This created an awkward situation for the casting directors, but they asked her to finish the scene using her normal London accent.

Maxwell wasn’t aware she was actually auditioning, so she didn’t perform at her best. As a result, she didn’t get the part. She thought it was just a script reading, and unfortunately, that approach cost her a potentially great opportunity.

After moving from the United States, Maxwell became a guest on the talk show Loose Women, where she often discusses the challenges she faced as an aspiring actress in Los Angeles. In an interview with The Mirror, she shared that she was heartbroken when she didn’t get a role on Frasier – it was the first time she’d cried over losing a job. The show later became incredibly successful and financially rewarding for Jane Leeves, but Maxwell admits it wasn’t her path. She says the experience was a significant learning moment that made her question her belief that success was guaranteed.

Maxwell isn’t as visible as he once was, mostly appearing on celebrity reality shows or in single episodes of quiet dramas. While he’s not a major star in the United States, British viewers often still think about what it would be like to see him return to that well-known role.

Jane Leeves Impressed a Very Stubborn Kelsey Grammar

After a couple of other actresses were considered and ruled out, Jane Leeves had the chance to win over the team. Before landing her role on Frasier, she’d appeared in some episodes of The Benny Hill Show and had a small part in Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.

She relocated to the United States in the 1980s and had a minor part in a little-known TV comedy called Throb. By 1993, it looked like Leeves was on the verge of a big break in the entertainment world. The show’s team quickly recognized her talent and wanted to cast her. However, Kelsey Grammer needed to see her act first, so he asked her to do a private scene reading with him.

She found out she got the job just a moment later. Peter Casey, one of the show’s creators, recalled in a 2018 Vanity Fair interview: “We were left waiting, feeling anxious, when the door suddenly opened. Kelsey rushed past us and announced, without even looking back, ‘She’s been hired.'”

Daphne Moon became a fan favorite on the show and played a big part in Jane Leeves winning awards like an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Leeves also formed close relationships with her co-stars; David Hyde Pierce is the godfather to her children, Peri Gilpin lives nearby, and she supported Peri during childbirth.

Finding Daphne Moon was a real challenge, but the team’s dedication ultimately succeeded. With the revival of Frasier on Paramount+, many fans were hoping to see Daphne make a comeback. While Frasier mentions she and Martin are now living a luxurious life owning a vineyard, viewers still miss her playful and witty personality.

Now that the reboot has been canceled, fans will have to enjoy their favorite moments with Daphne by rewatching old episodes. Luckily, both the original series and the recent reboot are available to stream, so you can still get your fill of ‘tossed salad and scrambled eggs’.
