Even Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) has his limits in Daredevil: Born Again.
Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again sees Mayor Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin (played by Vincent D’Onofrio), continuing to control New York City through intimidation and force. Still mourning the loss of his wife, Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer), he uses the Anti-Vigilante Task Force to target Daredevil, and his grief only makes his rule over the city more brutal for everyone.
I was really bummed to hear something at Motor City Comic Con. Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil, mentioned that a stunt he personally loved from the ‘Born Again’ season 2 footage actually didn’t make it into the final cut of the show. It’s always a bit of a letdown when you hear something cool gets cut, especially when the actor himself enjoyed it!
Charlie Cox originally envisioned a scene showing Daredevil’s return, planned for the start of season 2 when the suit reappears. Despite extensive preparation over several weeks, the scene was ultimately cut. Instead, the season begins with Daredevil dramatically leaping from a bridge onto a ship called the Northern Star.
The actor said the cut scene showed a close-up of Daredevil standing on the bridge before jumping onto the boat. It was meant to be a striking way to reintroduce Matt Murdock in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, offering viewers a more impactful initial glimpse of the character.
Despite loving the action in the scene, actor Cox said it was one of the scariest things he’s ever done. He trained and practiced extensively to feel ready for it. Even though the bridge was built in a studio, he was still 25 to 30 feet in the air. He explained that performing the stunt felt like falling backwards and trusting someone to catch him.
Cox acknowledged he was slightly disappointed the scene was cut, but he fully supported the creative team’s decision. He felt it didn’t quite match the episode’s overall tone and that replacing it with a more understated approach was the right choice.
Last year, I was asked to perform a stunt I really disliked. It was incredibly nerve-wracking – honestly, the most nervous I’ve ever been. I spent a lot of time practicing and perfecting it, but in the end, they ended up cutting the whole thing from the show. I probably shouldn’t be saying any of this!
At the very start of season two, before the suit is revealed, you see a boat, the Northern Star, pass under a bridge. A small figure then drops onto it. Originally, they had planned a different, more impactful moment: a close-up of me on the bridge. This would have been the first time viewers saw my character, DD. The camera would be very close, then pull back to reveal me standing and turning. Then came the stunt – a trust fall! It wasn’t actually on the bridge, but a set built in the studio, still about 25 to 30 feet high. I asked about safety mats, and they explained I’d be secured with wires. I questioned them, concerned about the lack of padding, but they insisted the mats would actually be more dangerous, and offered to put them there anyway.
I had to do a really intense trust fall – about 25 feet high! They even had me lean back and fly through the air before coming down. Luckily, the stunt rigging team was fantastic, and I completely trusted them. Despite that, I was still incredibly nervous!
I was shocked when I learned they had removed it. I immediately knew I had to get a copy of that video.
I have to admit, this is a perfect illustration of a tough but necessary creative choice. There’s this saying, ‘Kill your darlings,’ and it’s about letting go of something you love – a scene, a line, anything – if it doesn’t truly serve the overall work. That’s exactly what happened here. It was a part I really enjoyed creating, honestly it was both fun and a little scary to work on, but it just wasn’t the most effective way to start the story or get the point across. If we still had DVD extras, I’d absolutely share it with you all, but sadly that’s not the case anymore.
Daredevil was created by the legendary comic book team of Stan Lee and Bill Everett. He debuted in his own Marvel comic book, Daredevil #1, in 1964. Interestingly, Daredevil’s creation came about in a unique way. Following the popularity of Spider-Man, Marvel’s publisher, Martin Goodman, requested that Stan Lee develop a similar hero, which led to the birth of Daredevil.
Daredevil: Born Again seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Disney+.
