The world of Pokémon is huge and constantly expanding. It’s easy to follow the main games, but keeping track of all the spin-offs and side projects is a real challenge. There are so many mobile games, and they’re updated frequently, making it even harder to stay current.
Long before Pokémon became popular on mobile devices, the franchise had many different types of games, like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. If you were curious about a lesser-known part of the Pokémon world, you could usually find a game that explored it – but that’s becoming harder. As physical copies of these older games get more expensive, they’re becoming increasingly difficult to find and play.
However, The Pokémon Company surprisingly delivered an incredible RPG that doesn’t get the attention it deserves today. It’s a game worth revisiting and deserves a resurgence in popularity.
Pokémon Conquest Is An Underrated Gem
Fans often talk about Pokémon Conquest on sites like Reddit, remembering how different it was when it first came out. It’s still remarkably unique today, which makes me feel it deserves more attention. Originally released for the Nintendo DS in 2012, the game has faded over time and isn’t available on any digital platforms or as a port.
Developed by Koei Tecmo in collaboration with Nintendo, Conquest uniquely blends the worlds of the historical strategy game Nobunaga’s Ambition and Pokemon. Players can discover and team up with around 200 different Pokemon as they work to defeat Oda Nobunaga, who is attempting to harness the power of Arceus.
Like classic Pokémon games, this title is easy to pick up and play, even if you don’t usually enjoy strategy games, but it still offers a good challenge for experienced players after completing the main story. It also captures the unpredictable spirit of the Pokémon series, emphasizing exploration and adventure. Longtime fans of the RPG elements will feel right at home, as they’ve been enjoying Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games for years.
When Conquest was first revealed, many assumed it was a hoax. However, gameplay footage quickly proved it was genuine, and the game went on to receive positive reviews. It was a great fit for the Nintendo DS, encouraging players to quickly jump back in for ‘just one more battle,’ and the portable system allowed for convenient play sessions. A revival of Conquest on the Nintendo Switch 2 would be a natural fit.
Are There Too Many Pokémon Games?
I’m a huge Pokémon fan and can never get enough! What’s great is that developers often have a lot of creative freedom with spinoff games, letting them explore the Pokémon universe in fresh and interesting ways. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are protective of the core brand, but they allow spinoffs plenty of room for innovation.
The mobile game market is becoming crowded, especially with many free-to-play games. This makes it hard for titles to stand out, and unfortunately, that’s why Pokémon Conquest isn’t remembered by many players today. It’s also difficult to access, as it’s only available on the older Nintendo DS and can be quite expensive to buy used.
Because Koei Tecmo and Nintendo have a strong working relationship, a sequel to Pokémon Conquest could happen in the future. The original game was the idea of Tsunekazu Ishihara, who is still the CEO of The Pokémon Company today.
If you’re interested in playing Pokémon Conquest but don’t want to spend a lot of money on a physical copy, you can find it on YouTube. It’s a significant game in the Pokémon series and should be remembered as a classic. Hopefully, it will receive a proper re-release someday to ensure it’s preserved for fans.
