It’s been over ten years since the last Sherlock Holmes film, but director Guy Ritchie has given fans an update about a potential third movie. While a sequel to Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was announced in 2018, it hasn’t happened yet.
The series, which began in 2009, featured Robert Downey Jr. as the famous detective, and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson. Together, they investigated puzzling crimes in 1800s London, all while working to stop the criminals behind them.
Director Ritchie told Collider he’s eager to make Sherlock Holmes 3, saying he’d “love to” bring the film to life.
He expressed his fondness for Robert Downey Jr. and enjoyed working on their two films together. He believes any future collaborations simply depend on finding a time that works for everyone’s schedules.
We’re definitely interested in making this work, and we know there’s interest on your end as well. It’s surprising it hasn’t happened yet, but we’re not sure what it will take to get it done.

In November 2024, Law announced good news: a script for Sherlock Holmes 3 had been written, despite previous setbacks in development.
Last year, Jared Harris, who portrayed Professor James Moriarty, mentioned to The Direct that he hadn’t been told anything about a potential third movie.
The actor said he hadn’t been told anything about it and wished people would stop asking him, as he was completely in the dark.
