Most people recall The Golden Girls as a beloved ’80s comedy centered around four women – Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia – living in Miami. The show humorously explored their everyday lives, tackling subjects like love, growing older, and current events. While widely popular and often ahead of its time, some of its jokes haven’t aged well, dealing with sensitive topics like body image, sexuality, and race.
In Season 3’s “Mixed Blessings,” Dorothy’s son, Michael, becomes engaged to Lorraine, who is Black. Surprisingly, both mothers initially object to the relationship, but not for the reasons viewers might expect. The episode sparked controversy due to a scene where Rose and Blanche unexpectedly enter a room covered in mud masks while guests are present. After being removed from Hulu in 2020, it was put back up following protests from fans.
Golden Girls Season 3 Had a Controversial Moment
I was immediately drawn into “Mixed Blessings” when Michael revealed to Dorothy that he was engaged to a Black woman. It made me wonder if Dorothy’s later reservations about her son’s marriage had anything to do with race. But it turned out her concerns weren’t about that at all! She was actually worried that Lorraine was significantly older than Michael – twice his age, in fact! And just when you thought things couldn’t get more complicated, Lorraine’s mother, Greta, showed up.
Earlier, Dorothy had confused Lorraine with Michael’s future mother-in-law, but later found out she was mistaken. Now, Greta was making a similar error, thinking Dorothy was the housekeeper, until Lorraine set her straight. At that moment, Blanche and Rose entered the room, covered in mud masks as part of their pre-trip beauty routine.
The moment could have gone unnoticed, but Rose, characteristically unaware, exclaimed, “This is just dirt on our faces. We’re not actually Black!” The scene was meant to show everyone understanding the potential for misunderstanding without explanation. Luckily, the topic was quickly forgotten as the episode’s central emotional struggle came to light.
Surprisingly, Greta wasn’t bothered by Michael being younger, but by the fact that he was White. This sparked Dorothy to share her own reservations, and ultimately, neither mother gave their blessing. A few hours later, after discussing things, the two mothers realized they both wanted to support their children and help them avoid life’s pitfalls. However, they then discovered Rose had told them the couple planned to run off and get married anyway.
When Lorraine announced she was expecting, Dorothy and Greta agreed to help raise the child. However, they playfully disagreed on what to name the baby.
The Golden Girls Episode Was Removed From Hulu
A joke on Hulu’s streaming platform in 2020 sparked controversy because a scene involving mud masks resembled blackface. Though intended to address a sensitive topic, the scene also highlighted an ironic point: the characters, despite being from an earlier generation, were portrayed as surprisingly forward-thinking.
When the episode was taken down, Hollywood was actively trying to remove content considered offensive to Black audiences. This happened around the same time there was growing awareness of police violence against people of color, and it seems these companies were attempting to show support.
Removing that one episode didn’t have the intended effect. Almost three years later, a fan survey revealed that 95% of viewers hadn’t even found the mud mask scene offensive. Because of this, the episode was put back into the show’s lineup and is now available to watch.
Viewers really grasped the meaning of this episode far more than the network executives did. Because of their support, this groundbreaking episode – which questioned common ideas about race and age when it first aired – is now accessible to everyone.
The Golden Girls Was More Progressive Than Hulu Gave It Credit
This episode stands out because it aired not long after the Civil Rights Movement. The show cleverly used its popularity and reputation for tackling important issues to challenge common stereotypes seen in other media. While some of the humor might have been a bit edgy, it actually reinforced the show’s overall message.
Talking about race is still difficult, and this show tackled sensitive topics that could easily bring up painful memories. While some jokes might have seemed risky, the program ultimately showed support for interracial marriage and celebrated the upcoming birth of a new baby, bringing both sides together.
The show concluded on a positive note, even though the way things wrapped up wasn’t quite what viewers anticipated. That’s what fans, both then and now, appreciated about it.
The problem with this episode isn’t the message itself, which was similar to what the show “Mixed Blessings” intended, but how it was presented. Hulu thought they were helping the Black community, but instead, they started a long debate about whether the show was problematic, and that overshadowed any potential for bringing people together.
Ultimately, the episode was revived thanks to feedback from its audience. It’s heartening to see a dedicated fanbase, built over decades, come together to support a show that was a pioneer in addressing important and often difficult topics.
