Dutton Ranch’s Kevin Costner Yellowstone Premiere Callback Is A Massive Change For Beth

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first episode of Dutton Ranch, “The Untold Want.” In the premiere, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) shows a surprising act of kindness, which echoes a moment from Kevin Costner’s first appearance in Yellowstone. This moment also signals a significant shift in Beth’s character. Dutton Ranch begins a year after the events of Yellowstone, following Beth, her husband Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), and their adopted son Carter (Finn Little) as they attempt to build a new life in Texas.

The season premiere of Dutton Ranch shows that Beth and Rip’s Montana ranch was tragically destroyed by a fire after six months of happiness. They’ve started over in South Texas, purchasing a black angus cattle ranch in Rio Paloma. While they’re hoping for a peaceful and successful life, the Duttons seem unable to escape trouble and hardship.

Beth forms a friendship with Everett McKinney (Ed Harris), a warm-hearted vet with deep roots in Rio Paloma. They first meet quickly at a bar, but their second meeting, in the first episode of the show, mirrors how viewers were first introduced to John Dutton (Kevin Costner) in Yellowstone.

Beth’s Dutton Ranch Horse Reverses Kevin Costner’s First John Dutton Scene In Yellowstone

The first episode of Yellowstone begins with John Dutton, a rancher and Livestock Commissioner, getting into a car accident. Though he survives, one of his horses is badly injured. John humanely euthanizes the horse, showing his deep care for animals – a compassion that contrasts sharply with his harsh treatment of those who oppose him.

The first episode of Dutton Ranch starts similarly to Yellowstone, with Beth facing a roadblock caused by a car accident. She discovers a horse has been severely injured and is suffering. Just like her father John would have done, Beth decides the kindest thing would be to end the horse’s pain, but she finds she can’t go through with it. Everett McKinney also tries to euthanize the horse, but is stopped.

Rather than letting anything happen to the horse, Beth promises Everett a large sum of money to ensure its safety. She later visits the horse while it’s recovering at McKinney’s animal hospital, and happily tells a shocked Rip that they’ve just acquired a new horse.

Beth saved the horse when her father likely would have put it out of its misery. This moment suggests that Beth and Rip’s future at the Dutton Ranch might be a different, less harsh story than the often bleak and violent world of the original Yellowstone, which revolved around John Dutton.

Beth’s Love Of Horses In Dutton Ranch Is A Massive Change

Beth Dutton’s strong affection for horses on Dutton Ranch is a complete change from her feelings in Yellowstone. In the very first episode of Yellowstone, she even told Kayce (Luke Grimes) that she “hates the fing things.” This dislike stems from a tragic event in her childhood: her mother, Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol), died after being thrown from a horse.

Beth usually preferred speeding around Yellowstone in her fancy cars and stayed away from horses. But after marrying Rip in season 5, she started to warm up to them. By the final season, Beth had fully embraced her family’s ranching lifestyle and was riding horses alongside them.

The episode opens with a look back at the tragic fire that destroyed Beth and Rip’s beautiful Montana ranch. It’s clear Beth was most concerned with saving the horses, while Rip focused on freeing the cattle to escape the flames, alongside ensuring Carter’s safety.

Beth Dutton’s newfound openness about her love for horses is a significant and positive development for her character. It also reinforces Rip Wheeler’s feeling that they’ve carried the most admirable qualities of John Dutton with them as they’ve moved to Texas.

Dutton Ranch skillfully linked Beth and John Dutton’s stories at the beginning of Yellowstone, allowing Beth to make a more compassionate decision.
